Olympic snowboarder Redmond Gerard's return to the Winter Olympics in Beijing puts him in elite company. At 21, he is one of four snowboarders to return to the Winter Games after winning gold in the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic Games. Chloe Kim (halfpipe), Shaun White (halfpipe) and Jamie Anderson (slopestyle) are the others (Gerard won gold in men's slopestyle).

German speed skater Claudia Pechstein has become the oldest ever female Winter Olympian at 49 years of age. Pechstein, competing in her eighth games, set the record when she raced in the 3000m speed skating event on Saturday. Ad/> She overtakes luger Anne Abernathy, who was 48 years old when she competed in the 2002 Games at Salt Lake City.

The Winter Olympics began in earnest on Saturday, with the first full day of action in Beijing.
Pechstein became the oldest female Winter Olympian when she raced in the 3,000 meters speed skating at the Beijing Games on Saturday. Already the first woman to win five consecutive medals at the Winter Games, the 49-year-old Pechstein carried Germany's flag at Friday's opening ceremony, but came 20th and last in her event. Although she finished more than 20 seconds behind Dutch gold medallist Irene Schouten who also took her Olympic record Pechstein raised her arms and looked relieved as she crossed the finishing line.
BEIJING : Speed skating fans were excited to discover on Saturday that women's 3,000 metres Olympic silver medallist Francesca Lollobrigida was the great-niece of Italian film star Gina Lollobrigida.
