Sabalenka thrashed in Dubai as Paolini’s title defense ends

DUBAI: World number one Aryna Sabalenka slumped to a 6-3, 6-2 loss against Denmark’s Clara Tauson in the last 16 of the Dubai Championships on Wednesday, as Jasmine Paolini’s title defense came to a painful end. Sabalenka, who beat the 38th-ranked Tauson on her way to last month’s Australian Open final, suffered a second straight premature exit after losing in her opening match in Qatar a week ago. Tauson broke Sabalenka’s serve six times and the Dane will go on to play Czech youngster Linda Noskova, who knocked out fifth seed Jessica Pegula in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals. The 22-year-old Tauson beat Noskova in the first round of the Australian Open.

Real Madrid’s Bellingham banned for two matches after dissent

MADRID: Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham was hit with a two-match La Liga ban on Wednesday by the Spanish football federation’s disciplinary committee after he was sent off for dissent. The England international was dismissed during the champions’ 1-1 draw at Osasuna on Saturday by referee Jose Munuera Montero. Bellingham, who insisted he had been expressing his frustration and not insulting the referee, will miss league matches against Girona and Real Betis on February 23 and March 2 respectively. The disciplinary committee said Madrid’s attempts to show that Bellingham had not insulted the official were “insufficient” to remove “the presumption of veracity of the referee’s report.” Bellingham had said his dismissal was due to a misunderstanding.

Tempers flared during the Pakistan vs New Zealand Champions Trophy opener in Karachi on Wednesday with the hosts' bowlers coming under the pump from the latter's batters. Tom Latham (118*) and Will Young (107) scored fine centuries as Pakistan scored 320/5 in 50 overs. The famed Pakistan bowling line-up came under pressure with Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah conceding over six runs per over. Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan lost his cool quite often. But the starkest one happened in the  47th over.

New Zealand Duo Replicate Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag; Register Rare Feat In Champions Trophy

Will Young and Tom Latham joined an exclusive New Zealand club with their blistering centuries against the defending champions, Pakistan, in the Champions Trophy tournament opener on Wednesday in Karachi. Young and Latham turned the opening clash into a run-scoring fest on a dry strip filled with plenty of cracks. Both players went on to hit the three-digit figures as New Zealand breezed past the 300-run mark. It was also the fifth instance that two players had scored centuries in a single Champions Trophy innings. The first instance was when Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag did so for India against England in 2002.

Tim Southee Equals Chris Gayle In Elite Test List Dominated By Batters. Ben Stokes At Helm

New Zealand veteran Tim Southee on Saturday equalled West Indies great Chris Gayle's tally of sixes in Test cricket to move to joint-fourth spot in the all-time list, with his 98th hit over the fence in Hamilton. Southee, playing his 107th and final Test for New Zealand, reached the milestone in the match against England at the Seddon Park. Southee hammered three sixes in his quick-fire 10-ball 23 which also included one four. England captain Ben Stokes leads the all-time list with 133 sixes in 110 Tests so far, followed by former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum with 107 sixes in 101 matches.

England Fight Back On Even Opening Day Of Third New Zealand Test

New Zealand failed to capitalise on a rock-steady start to reach 315-9 on day one of the third and final Test against England in Hamilton on Saturday. Led by seamers Matthew Potts and Gus Atkinson, the tourists fought back with the ball after openers Tom Latham (63) and Will Young (42) put on 105 for the opening stand. However, the hard early work was undone by a flurry of loose shots in the afternoon as six wickets fell for 89 runs at Seddon Park.
