Petra Vlhova produced a sensational run to claim her first Giant Slalom victory of the season in Are on Friday. The Slovakian was in front after the first run, and went even better in the evening as she claimed victory — in the worst of the conditions — to beat Marta Bassino by more than a second thanks to a combined time of 2:32.59. Ad/> Mikaela Shiffrin continued her good form after her Olympic disappointment, and she made up the podium.
Petra Vlhova gained her first giant slalom win for a year under the lights at Are, Sweden on Friday (11 March).
Mikaela Shiffrin insists that it was not the weight of expectations that led to her failing to finish her third race at the Winter Olympics. The American was a strong favourite to win gold in the combined event and was well placed after finishing fifth fastest in the morning's downhill leg. But returning to the Ice River course, where she had skied out in both the giant slalom and slalom, her favourite events, Shiffrin missed a gate and skied out yet again.
