Rajasthan Royals youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal missed out on his second hundred of the season in his team's thumping 9-wicket win against Kolkata Knight Riders on Thursday. Jaiswal remained unbeaten in 98, leaving his teammates and many fans with an unfulfilling feeling. However, what infuriated a few was the attempt from KKR spinner Suyash Sharma to bowl a wide ball on the final delivery of the 13th over, in what looked like a bid to deny Jaiswal a hundred. Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra was left disappointed with Suyash's intent.
The ever-evolving format of T20 cricket has given players, fans, coaches, and even pundits plenty to think about the approach that batters need to have to excel in this fast-paced game. The likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, two of the greatest batters of their generation, have seen questions being raised over their performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. While Rohit is struggling for runs, the problem for Kohli is more on the lines of strike-rate. Having seen players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Suryakumar Yadav set the stage on fire with their bat, former India cricketer Saba Karim gave his honest take on the shortest format fo the game.
The IPL 2023 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Supergiants in Hyderabad on Saturday was witness to some bizarre scenes. The match had to be stopped for close to 10 minutes due to unruly behaviour of the crowd as they threw objects at LSG dugout during the first innings. The on-field umpires had to intervene as LSG players and support staff could be seen huddled as match was halted. According to Cricbuzz, 'nuts and bolts' were thrown on the field, however, there has been no official confirmation about what exactly happened. The commentators, however, confirmed that some object was indeed thrown on to the field.
It promises to be a showdown between this edition's two most impactful batters in young Yashasvi Jaiswal and veteran Faf du Plessis when Rajasthan Royals take on Royal Challengers Bangalore, who are looking to avoid a hat-trick of defeats, in an IPL match on Sunday. Both Jaiswal and du Plessis are in scintillating form and are the top-two run-getters in the tournament so far.
India batter Virat Kohli led the national side after taking over the leadership duties from MS Dhoni. Though India failed to win any major ICC trohpy during Kohli's reign as captain, the team dominated world cricket. Be it from instilling confidence on his teammates to standing for his players, Kohli beautifully played the role of the leader. However, before entering the senior international circuit too, Kohli had proven himself as an apt leader. He also led Delhi in the domestic cricket before leading India to the U-19 World Cup.
Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith wants Virat Kohli to use different scoring options like the sweep shot against spinners post powerplay after the star India batter's "taking the game deep" approach has come under a bit of criticism. Kohli has scored more than 400 runs opening the innings for Royal Challengers Bangalore in this IPL at a strike rate of 133-plus but he has not been able to force the pace of scoring in the middle overs.
Virat Kohli's century drought of almost three years since November 2019 is as famous as the star cricketer himself. A high-flying internatinal career suddenly lost the track as centuries stopped coming out of the bat of Kohli -- the player who was believed to break the record of 100 centuries made by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. At the start it seemed like a short-term struggle for Kohli to score a ton -- what would have been his 71st at the highest level, but the woe continued and despite being among runs, the right-handed batter had to wait for almost three years before he scored one.
