Bajrang Punia Suspended For Four Years By National Anti-Doping Body Due To Violation Of Code

The National Anti-Doping Agency on Tuesday suspended Bajrang Punia for four years for his refusal to provide his sample for dope test on March 10 during selection trials for the national team. NADA had first suspended the Tokyo Games bronze medallist wrestler on April 23 for the offence following which, the World Governing body UWW had also suspended him. Bajrang had appealed against the provisional suspension and NADA's Anti-Disciplinary Doping panel (ADDP) had revoked it on May 31 till NADA issues the notice of charge.

Vinesh Phogat To Build World-Class Sports Academy For Young Athletes

Former Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has announced that she would build a world-class sports academy for young athletes with the Rs 4 crore prize money that she received from the Haryana government. Phogat received this award under Haryana's premier sports policy, which allows medal-winning athletes to choose between a government job, a land allotment, or a cash reward. The policy grants Rs. 6 crore for an Olympic gold, Rs. 4 crore for silver, and Rs. 2.5 crore for bronze. Despite being disqualified from the women's 50kg category due to a slight weight infraction, Phogat was still awarded the cash prize equivalent to a silver medalist.

Wrestler-turned-politician Vinesh Phogat has opted for a cash prize after the Haryana government recently offered to her benefits equivalent to an Olympic silver medallist, asking her to choose from various options. Phogat, 30, was disqualified from the 2024 Paris Olympics for being overweight ahead of her gold medal bout in the 50-kg category. The three-time Olympian led protests against former former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Singh. She successfully contested the Haryana Assembly elections from Julana in Jind district last year on a Congress ticket.

Olympian wrestler and Congress MLA from Haryana, Vinesh Phogat, on Wednesday opposed the decision of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to lift the suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), restore its affiliation and hand over the reins to the current set of office-bearers. The Sports Ministry suspended the Sanjay Singh-led federation three days after the elections over the announcement to hold U15 and U20 nationals and has asked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to establish a temporary panel to oversee the operations of the WFI. On Monday, it decided to lift the suspension following an order by the Delhi High Court.

The Sports Ministry had suspended the WFI body after the newly elected WFI president, Sanjay Singh, announced the hosting of the U-15 and U-20 nationals at Nandini Nagar in the Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh in December 2023.

The Sports Ministry had suspended the WFI body after the newly elected WFI president Sanjay Singh announced the hosting of the U-15 and U-20 nationals at Nandini Nagar in the Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh in December 2023. Speaking to ANI, Sanjay said, "This is a very happy moment for the wrestling federation. I want to thank PM Modi, Union HM Amit Shah and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya for removing the suspension on WFI for the betterment of the country."
