World number two and Australian Open champion Sabalenka swept 10 of the last 12 games to win 6-3, 6-2 as she kick-started her push to reach the second week in Paris for the first time. Kostyuk honoured her pledge not to shake hands with Sabalenka in protest at Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Belarus is a key military ally of Moscow.
Coco Gauff and Maria Sakkari were the latest big names to fall in the early rounds of the Italian Open, while Victoria Azarenka was forced to withdraw with injury. ROME: World number two Aryna Sabalenka suffered an early shock at the Italian Open on Thursday (May 11) as the in-form Belarusian crashed to a 7-6(4) 6-2 defeat by American Sofia Kenin in a high-octane second-round match.
Coco Gauff made little error as she swept past Yulia Putintseva 6-0 6-1 at the Italian Open in Rome. The sixth seed won seven straight games as she claimed the first set in style and took the front foot in the opener, before Putintseva clawed a game back to the appreciation of the Rome crowd. Ad But it would only go down as a consolation, as Gauff thundered through the next five games to put a marker down in her Rome opener.
