In the last week, three major international cricket tournaments commenced.
Fast bowler Lauren Filer will make her England debut in the one-off Ashes test against Australia at Trent Bridge, the country's cricket board (ECB) said on Wednesday.
English cricket has one internationally top-ranked player. She is not at fortress Edgbaston vibing with the Hollies Stand, but preparing for the start of her own summer campaign. Sophie Ecclestone is the world’s No 1 female T20 and ODI bowler. She first hit that mark in 2020 and has held on pretty tightly since, unusually combining supremacy on the field with remaining below the radar off it.
P erhaps the best part of the big Stuart Broad set-piece on the second morning at Edgbaston, one of those moments where the wind seems to change, the dogs miaow, the birds fly backwards through the sky and the clock strikes Broad o’clock, was the introduction of mimicry, physical comedy, improv into the usual routine.
Laura Wright, last seen by England fans faultlessly executing the nation’s first major public rendition of God Save the King at last year’s Test against South Africa at the Oval, was back on anthem duties, only this time she was not only singing them but signing them, with backing signals from the Knotty Ash Signing Choir and the Liverpool Signing Choir. For the first time the entire build-up to an England Test was signed, with the toss and captains’ interviews accompanied on the big screens (this is being seen as a pilot and will be repeated on the first day of the women’s Test at Trent Bridge, while two members of the England team who brought home the Deaf Ashes last year have pre-recorded toss results to use across the summer). The interpretation of the loud cheer that followed England winning the toss and choosing to bat thus became the day’s first, but certainly not the last, double fist-pump.
The Rose Bowl in Southampton will host its first Ashes match in 2027 when England's men's team play Australia in a five-match series, the country's cricket board (ECB) said on Wednesday.
England Women have announced their squad for their first Ashes Test against Australia at Trent Bridge, with Kate Cross included after her recovery from illness. Lauren Filer and Danielle Gibson have been named in the squad for the first time, with the former impressing with her bowling displays for Western Storm in the last two seasons.
England have named the uncapped Western Storm duo of Danielle Gibson and Lauren Filer in their 15-player group for next week’s Ashes Test at Trent Bridge.
