It was a 10 out of 10 performance from England against Samoa to kick off the World Cup.
By Josh Graham, Sportsbeat Dominic Young and Elliott Whitehead scored two tries apiece as hosts England recorded an emphatic 60-6 win over Samoa in a thrilling Rugby League World Cup opener. Ad Jack Welsby scored the first try of the tournament and provided both assists for debutant winger Young to put the hosts 18-6 up at half-time.
Dom Young scored twice on his Test debut as England produced an outstanding team display to comfortably defeat Samoa in the opening game of the Rugby League World Cup. The bookies had Samoa as favourites given the quality of players Matt Parish has been able to call upon from the NRL. In contrast, little was made of England in the run-up to the tournament but the hosts were outstanding from start to finish.
The Newcastle Knights winger, Dom Young, will almost certainly make his Test debut for England in Saturday’s Rugby League World Cup opener against Samoa, after he was named alongside five other uncapped players in Shaun Wane’s 19-man squad for the first match of the tournament.
England have named seven uncapped players in their 24-man squad for the Rugby League World Cup, including the Salford duo of Marc Sneyd and Andy Ackers. The Guardian revealed on Thursday that Sneyd and Ackers were set to win their first call-ups for the tournament after impressing Shaun Wane, the head coach, with their end-of-season form at the Red Devils.
The stars of the St Helens side that created Super League history on Saturday say there is no reason their dominance cannot continue for years to come.
There can now surely be no doubting the matter. For the first time in Super League history – and only the second since rugby league was founded in 1895 – a team has won four consecutive league titles. In the early-1990s it was Wigan Warriors who swept all before them but this time it is St Helens, who in the process of a deserved Grand Final victory against Leeds, perhaps finally secured their status as the greatest team to pick up a rugby league ball.
St Helens moved within one win of claiming the League Leaders Shield after a comfortable victory over Hull KR at the Totally Wicked Stadium.
