Irish national time trial champion Ben Healy scored a podium finish at the Amstel Gold Race in the Netherlands beating every rider but one to take second place.
Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) stormed to victory at Amstel Gold with another dominant display, as he beat Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) and Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers). Pogacar made his move with 28.5km to go on the Keutenberg. The Slovenian didn’t look back, as he went on to win the Dutch spring classic for the first time.
There will be another mouthwatering Classics match-up at the 2023 Amstel Gold Race on Sunday as Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) and Britain's Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) go head-to-head. The pair were both in the field at the recent Tour of Flanders but experienced contrasting fortunes, Pogacar taking the win after a late solo breakaway, while Pidcock made a «stupid» fuelling mistake that meant he was not in contention at the front of the race.
Ineos Grenadiers’ Tom Pidcock lamented his “stupid mistake” of failing to eat enough for the Tour of Flanders on Sunday. That error contributed to the British team failing to land a single rider in the top 20 on the day, with an even worse result for Ben Turner, who fractured his arm. Ad Pidcock was one of the favourites for a good showing, though he would have done well to beat any of Tadej Pogacar, Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert in Belgium.
Eurosport expert Dani Christmas believes the women’s Tour of Flanders is going to be “absolutely bonkers” in a race she describes as “incredibly special”. Lotte Kopecky will defend her title from last year as SD Worx bring a very strong team, including Lorena Wiebes, Demi Vollering and Marlen Reusser, to one of the biggest one-day races on the calendar. Ad In 2022, Kopecky beat Annemiek van Vleuten in a head-to-head sprint in the final hundred metres.
Britain's Tom Pidcock could gatecrash what is expected to be a battle between cycling's so-called Three Kings and snatch victory in the Tour of Flanders this weekend, according to former winner Philippe Gilbert.
Alberto Contador has suggested Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) will have to “make a decision” after this season: give everything to win a Grand Tour or remain a multi-discipline star. Pidcock added Strade Bianche to his impressive palmarès earlier in March after a spectacular solo charge from 50km. He also won Olympic mountain bike gold, the cyclo-cross world title and triumphed on Alpe d’Huez at the Tour de France during an incredible 12-month spell across 2021 and 2022.
Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) is set to miss this weekend’s Milan-San Remo race with concussion following his crash on the final stage of Tirreno-Adriatico. The British rider went down late on during the final stage of the race in San Benedetto del Tronto.
