England vs New Zealand, 3rd Test Day 1 Live Updates: Stuart Broad struck early for England as Tom Latham was sent packing for a duck in the third Test against New Zealand. New Zealand recalled Neil Wagner to their side as captain Kane Williamson won the toss and elected to bat at Headingley on Thursday. World Test champions New Zealand were looking to salvage some pride at 2-0 down in a three-match series. Star batter Williamson returned to the team after missing the five-wicket defeat in the second Test at Trent Bridge due to a bout of Covid-19, with left-arm seamer Wagner given his first game of the series after towering paceman Kyle Jamieson suffered a tour-ending back injury in Nottingham. Matt Henry dropped out of the side, with Michael Bracewell -- who made his debut at Trent Bridge -- preferred ahead of specialist spinner Ajaz Patel. England had already made one, enforced, change to their side with Surrey fast bowler Jamie Overton given a Test debut in place of James Anderson after England's all-time leading Test wicket-taker was ruled out with an ankle injury. Under their new leadership duo of captain Ben Stokes and red-ball coach Brendon McCullum, the former New Zealand captain, England were looking to complete a first home clean sweep in a series of more than two matches since defeating India 4-0 in 2011. England chased down 299 in little over two sessions on the final day to win the high-scoring 2nd Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. With several fine knocks on display, the one that stole the show was Jonny Bairstow's brutal 92-ball 136 in the fourth innings as England showed great intent to win a match that looked headed for a draw. The game saw a total of 249 boundaries hit, comprising 229 fours and 24 sixes. This is the most boundaries hit in a Test match, breaking the record set by the drawn Sydney Test between Australia and India in 2004, which is best remembered for Sachin Tendulkar's unbeaten 241.

During Day 5 of the ongoing second Test between England and New Zealand, Kiwi pacer Trent Boult broke a unique record in the longest format. Known for his bowling skills, Boult has now scored the most runs by a player batting at number 11 in Tests. Boult scored 17 runs in the 2nd innings, taking his tally to 640 runs while batting as the 'Jack'. Joe Root has been on a run-scoring spree in Test cricket in the past year. After his batting exploits in the opening Test at Lord's against New Zealand where he scored a century to take England to victory, Root joined an elite list of players to score 10,000 runs in the longest format of the game. He followed that up with yet another stunning knock to lead England's reply to New Zealand's mammoth first innings total of 553 in the second Test. Root's 176-run knock in the first innings also helped him go past India batting legend Sunil Gavaskar in the all-time Test runs list.
