Sam Bennett just missed out on the medal places after earning a fifth-place finish in the men's road race at the European Championships in Munich.
Fabio Jakobsen (Netherlands) came out on top of a thrilling mass sprint to take gold in the elite men’s road race at the European Championships in Munich on Saturday. The 25-year-old got his nose in front at the finish line to edge Arnaud Demare (France) and Tim Merlier (Belgium), who took silver and bronze respectively.
Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team have confirmed that sprint star Mark Cavendish will leave the Tour of Poland to put his whole focus on the Commonwealth Games. Cavendish will represent the Isle of Man in the road race on Sunday in Warwick, and will have familiar faces for company with Geraint Thomas of Ineos Grenadiers representing Wales.
Alexander Kristoff (Intermarche-Wanty Gobert) grabbed a stunning victory in Scheldeprijs, riding his luck through the crosswinds early on and then launching an audacious late lone break to cross the line well clear of the chasing pack. Danny van Poppel (Bora-Hansgrohe) out-sprinted Sam Welsford (Team DSM) to grab second, but no one had the pace to catch the Norwegian on a wet and windy day.
A “dog’s breakfast” of a sprint finish in which “the favourite’s teams all got it wrong” was won with a delayed but daring dart for the line by Phil Bauhaus of Bahrain Victorious. Though the last hundred metres of Tirreno-Adriatico’s final stage looked chaotic on camera, everyone stayed upright, and all the riders made it home safely.
Caleb Ewan (Lotto–Soudal) timed his sprint to perfection to claim stage 3 of Tirreno-Adriatico 2022, on a day that was lit up by another audacious attack from Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates). The stage had the look of one that would play out for the sprinters to dominate, and that was the case as Ewan came over the top to take the win from Arnaud Demare (Groupama–FDJ). But only after the peloton had to work hard to reel in Pogacar and a select group who went away after the intermediate sprint.
2020 Tirreno-Adriatico stage winner Tim Merlier has wasted no time in opening his 2022 account by taking the victory on Stage 2 on Tuesday. With the leading group reeled in by the peloton with just a few kilometres to go it was always going to be a tense and exciting sprint finish.
