ZHANGJIAKOU, China (AP) — The U.S. figure skaters whose Olympic silver medals are being withheld have filed an appeal to have them awarded before the end of the Beijing Games, with a decision expected as soon as Saturday night.
Australian Olympic team chef de mission Geoff Lipshut has joined the wide condemnation of the treatment of Russian teenage figure skater Kamila Valieva.
Eteri Tutberidze, the under fire figure skating coach, has responded after a strong backlash to her treatment of Kamila Valieva at the Winter Olympics, saying she is «at a loss» after criticism from IOC president Thomas Bach. Russia claimed gold and silver in the ladies' singles but the post-event atmosphere was not one of celebration. Anna Shcherbakova spoke of feeling an «emptiness inside» after winning the gold medal, while her team-mates, Valieva and Alexandra Trusova, were left very upset after the competition at Beijing 2022.
Lawyers for Team USA's figure skaters have filed an appeal for their women's medals to be awarded before Sunday's closing ceremony. The medals for the women's team figure skating event have yet to be awarded as the doping case against the Russian Olympic Committee's (ROC) Kamila Valieva remains ongoing.
Thomas Bach said Friday it was "chilling" to see how Kamila Valieva's coach treated the Russian teenager after a doping scandal engulfing the skater culminated in an error-strewn performance at the Beijing Olympics. The International Olympic Committee president said he was "very disturbed" to see the 15-year-old fall several times in Thursday's women's figure skating final, as she unravelled and sobbed under the glare of the global spotlight. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is looking into Valieva's entourage, after the doping controversy tarnished the second week of the Games in the Chinese capital.
