KYIV: With next year’s Paris Olympics on the horizon and Russia’s invasion looking more like a prolonged conflict, Ukraine’s sports minister on Friday renewed a threat to boycott the games if Russia and Belarus are allowed to compete and said Kyiv would lobby other nations to join. Such a move could lead to the biggest rift in the Olympic movement since the Cold War era.
BERLIN : Olympic officials are working behind the scenes to contain growing opposition to its plans for Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete at the Paris Olympics as the Ukraine war threatens to rekindle Cold War-era sporting frictions.
MOSCOW: The head of Russia's Olympic Committee said Tuesday that athletes representing Russia must not be subjected to different conditions from those of other countries, amid a growing row over their participation in the 2024 Paris Games. "Russians must participate exactly on the same conditions as all other athletes. Any additional conditions or criteria are unwelcome, especially any that have political overtones, which are completely unacceptable for the Olympic movement," Stanislav Pozdnyakov said, according to Russian news agencies.
KYIV: Ukrainian presidential aide Mykhaylo Podolyak on Monday (Jan 30) called the International Olympic Committee (IOC) a "promoter of war", after the sports body said it was considering ways for Russian athletes to compete in next year's Olympic Games in Paris.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has vowed his country will launch an international campaign to prevent Russian athletes from being allowed to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympics. Sports Minister Vadim Guttsait said on Thursday that Ukraine would not rule out boycotting the Games if Russian and Belarusian athletes took part.

Ukraine sports minister Vadym Guttsait has warned the country would consider a boycott of the 2024 Paris Olympics if Russia and Belarus athletes were allowed to take part. The International Olympic Committee said on Wednesday it was continuing to work on a pathway which would enable Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete as neutrals.
