PEYRAGUDES, France: Defending champion Tadej Pogacar won stage 17 of the Tour de France in the Pyrenees on Wednesday, but was once again shadowed over the line by overall leader in Jumbo-Visma’s Jonas Vingegaard.

UAE Team Emirates rider Tadej Pogacar was pushed to his limits on a thrilling day's racing as he won Stage 17 of the Tour de France to slightly close the gap on overall leader Jonas Vingegaard at the summit of Peyragudes on Wednesday.
“Fair play to them, they really took it on” said Geraint Thomas, after he was dropped on Stage 17 of the Tour de France, losing more time to yellow jersey holder Jonas Vingegaard and defending champion Tadej Pogacar — who won the stage. The 2018 winner still sits a comfortable third in the general classification, but he is now 4’56” back from the leader with three competitive stages to go — before the traditional procession to the Champs Elysees for the GC. Ad/> UAE Team Emirates riders Mikkel Bjerg and Brandon McNulty led a superb breakaway which Thomas was not able to live with, and McNulty guided Pogacar into a position to put down the throttle with 300m to go — eventually beating Vingegaard to the stage win.
Rafal Majka (UAE Team Emirates) will not start Stage 17 of the Tour de France in another blow to Tadej Pogacar's hopes of securing the yellow jersey. The Polish rider suffered a muscle tear after his chain snapped while climbing on Stage 16, and UAE Team Emirates team principal Mauro Gianetti has confirmed to Eurosport that Majka will be unable to continue the Tour. Ad/> Majka had been Pogacar's key mountain lieutenant and likely to play a key role across the two remaining stages in the Pyrenees as the Slovenian looked to overhaul Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo Visma) at the top of the general classification standings.
