Caleb Ewan (Lotto–Soudal) timed his sprint to perfection to claim stage 3 of Tirreno-Adriatico 2022, on a day that was lit up by another audacious attack from Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates). The stage had the look of one that would play out for the sprinters to dominate, and that was the case as Ewan came over the top to take the win from Arnaud Demare (Groupama–FDJ). But only after the peloton had to work hard to reel in Pogacar and a select group who went away after the intermediate sprint.

Filippo Ganna powered to victory on the opening stage of Tirreno-Adriatico ahead of Remco Evenepoel. Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) won the individual time trial in 15 minutes and 18 seconds to beat one of the pre-race favourites Evenepoel (Quick-Step AlphaVinyl) by 11 seconds.
After today’s compelling performance from Tadej Pogacar, you might think this a contrarian position to take. Such an extraordinary solo ride must, surely, have added a few stones to the side of the scales, in support of its elevation to the top table of one-day races. It was certainly an extraordinary ride.
