Virat Kohli should name player and share what message he was expecting after quitting captaincy: Sunil Gavaskar

Virat Kohli should name the player he was expecting a call from after quitting Test captaincy and also specify the kind of message he was waiting for, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said on Monday. Kohli, who top scored with 60 in India's five-wicket defeat at the hands of Pakistan in an Asia Cup match on Sunday, said that barring former skipper MS Dhoni, none of the former players called him. "One thing I can tell you is when I gave up Test captaincy, I got a message from only one person who I've played with before -- MS Dhoni," Kohli said after the match. "A lot of people have my number and a lot of people give suggestions on TV, but among people who have my number, I didn't get a message from anyone else," he had said. When Gavaskar was asked about Virat's grievance, he was very categorical. "It's very difficult to say as to whom Virat is referring to? If he would have taken any names, you can then go and ask that person, if you have contacted him or not. What I have heard is that he is talking about only MSD having called him after leaving Test captaincy," Gavaskar told "Sports Tak". "If he is talking about former players, who have played with him, we know who all from that lot come on TV. He should name the player he is referring to. Ask them Kya Bhai aapne koi Message nahi kiya (Bro, you didn't message me?)".

"Got Out To Forgettable Shots": Sunil Gavaskar On Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma's Performance vs Pakistan

While India registered a memorable five-wicket win against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2022 on Sunday, there were a few headaches for the side too which they would want to sort out going forward. Going into the humdinger, the focus was on India's top three and all three -- K L Rahul (0), Rohit Sharma (12 off 18) and Virat Kohli (35 off 34) -- did not have the best of times in the middle. Though Kohli showed signs of returning to form, he rode his luck on occasions. Former Indian cricket team captain Sunil Gavaskar felt that the players need to score big.

"Hey Please Don't Interfere...": Sunil Gavaskar's Stern Response To IPL Critics

The Indian Premier League (IPL) may get a dedicated two and half month exclusive window from the next Futures Tours and Programme (FTP) calender of the ICC starting 2024, according to several reports. If that happens, it will be another validation of the growing impact of the T20 franchise league, which is the richest cricket tournament in the world. Also in recent times, several IPL team owners have invested in sides at the United Arab Emirates T20 league and the South African T20 League.

Franchise T20 leagues are an ever-growing phenomenon in world cricket currently. IPL franchise owners control majority of the teams in the two leagues. The abundance of franchise cricket has meant that players from around the world are getting a chance to play in multiple lucrative T20 leagues. However, active Indian players have so far not been allowed to play in any of the foreign leagues.

"If I Get 20 Minutes With Him...": Sunil Gavaskar On How He Can Help Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli had a forgettable run in the recently-concluded England Tour. In none of the matches in Tests, ODIs or T20Is against Englanr, the former Indian cricket team captain could score big. His string of scores in the recent Tour of England are 11, 20, 1, 11, 16 and 17. He is not part of the Indian squad for the upcoming Tour of West Indies, where India will be playing three ODIs and five T20Is. With no century since late 2019, several former players have spoken out about the long rope being given to Kohli.

"Rishabh Pant Can Be Equally Destructive": Sunil Gavaskar Suggests New Role For Rishabh Pant In T20Is, Cites Australian Great's Example

Rishabh Pant was the best Indian batter in the Edgbaston Test against England with a ton and a half-century. Though it was not enough to take India to a win, his performance with the bat was lauded by all. However, his white ball form has not been great. He did not have a stellar IPL and his performance in the T20I series against South Africa was also not that great. With the 2022 T20 World Cup in less than four months' time, Pant's form is going to be crucial.

India vs England 5th Test: Sunil Gavaskar Weighs In On Edgbaston Pitch After England's Record Chase
