Old faces James Anderson and Stuart Broad embrace new approach to run through New Zealand top-order

As they prepared to bowl their opening deliveries at the start of England’s home summer of 2022, both James Anderson and Stuart Broad received generous applause at Lord’s. Nothing new about that, of course, only this time felt a little different: the greeting seemed like an endorsement - and a repudiation, therefore, of England’s two highest wicket-takers being dropped from the tour of the West Indies in March.

Watch: Shane Warne Given Moving Tribute During England vs New Zealand Lord's Test

On March 4, 2022, world cricket lost a legend in Shane Warne. The former Australian leg-spinner died at the age of 52 due to natural causes on the Thai holiday island of Koh Samui. Warne remains the second highest wicket taker in the history of Test cricket, behind Muttiah Muralitharan, with 708 scalps to his name. Warne played 194 One Day Internationals for Australia in which he scalped 293 wickets. The right-hander was also handy with the bat as he scored 3,154 runs in his Test career. He amassed 1,018 runs in the 50-overs format. The leg-spinner took a total of 1001 international wickets and was the first-ever bowler to scale the peak of 1,000 international wickets.

England vs New Zealand 1st Test, Day 1 Live Updates: Stuart Broad Strikes As New Zealand Lose Third Wicket

Netherlands vs West Indies 2nd ODI Live Updates: James Anderson gave England an excellent start on Day 1 of the ongoing first Test against New Zealand at the Lord's Cricket Ground. Anderson dismissed New Zealand openers Will Young and Tom Latham early in the morning session, putting the visitors on the backfoot. Earlier, New Zealand had won the toss and elected to bat. England are under new captain Ben Stokes and new coach Brendon McCullum and will be hoping the new leadership will also bring a change in results. New Zealand, meanwhile are returning to England after winning the series there last year as well and then the World Test Championship final against India. While New Zealand will be without Henry Nicholls, who has been ruled out with an injury, Trent Boult has been declared fit to feature. England named veteran pacers James Anderson and Stuart Broad in their playing XI. Durham pacer Matthew Potts is also set to make his debut, while Alex Lees will continue to open. (LIVE SCORECARD)

Ben Stokes Backs Brendon McCullum To Make England "Feel 10 Feet Tall"

Ben Stokes has said Brendon McCullum was already making England's players "feel 10 feet tall" ahead of the first Test against the coach's native New Zealand at Lord's starting Thursday. The series opener of a three-match contest will be England's first since new Test captain Stokes, himself born in New Zealand but brought up in Cumbria, in England's northwest, succeeded Joe Root as skipper. It will also be England's first game following the appointment of former New Zealand captain McCullum as their Test coach, with the new leadership duo bidding to revive the fortunes of a team who have won just one of their last 17 matches at this level and gone over 12 months without a red-ball series victory.
