"Sourav Ganguly Hadn't..." Ex-Selector On Why MS Dhoni Missed 2004 Pakistan Tour

Former BCCI selector Saba Karim revealed that he had pitched MS Dhoni's name for India's squad which travelled to Pakistan in 2004 but it did not work out as then skipper Sourav Ganguly had not seen him in action. During a recent interaction, Saba talked about how he saw Dhoni perform for Bihar and was impressed by the determination shown by the ex-India skipper. Dhoni was not selected for the 2003-04 series against Pakistan but in 2004, he went on to make his ODI debut against Bangladesh. Just Virender Sehwag Things: Sourav Ganguly Celebrated Shirtless To Get "Undergarments Endorsement Deal"

On July 13, 2002, Indian cricket got one of its everlasting images when then India captain Sourav Ganguly celebrated shirtless from the balcony of the hallowed Lord's dressing room after the 'Men in Blue' came from the brink of defeat to beat England and lift the NatWest Trophy. Ganguly was obviously incensed about the way England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff had taken off his shirt during a match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai during an earlier tour and was waiting to return the compliment.

"Sunil Gavaskar Wasn't The Best India Captain But...": Shashi Tharoor Makes Interesting Observation

Indian cricket has seen many great captains who took the game to the next level. Be it the terrific Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi or Ajit Wadekar or Sourav Ganguly, every one left an indelible mark on the sport. However, when it comes to most successful Indian captains, two names which come first to the mind are Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni. Both achieved great success by winning World Cups as India skippers. The Indian Board has often given the captaincy armbands to batting and bowling greats too. Bishan Singh Bedi, Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli are part of that list. They achieved success as captain in varying degrees.

What Next For 'Vice-Captain' Ajinkya Rahane?

One of the finest Indian batters, especially in overseas conditions, Ajinkya Rahane marked his Test return with a bang, scoring curcial runs for the national team in the World Test Championship final. Though India lost the title to Australia, Rahane's performances earned him a call-up for the West Indies tour, that too in the role of 'vice-captain', a designation he had lost roughly a year ago. But, with Rahane failing to fire in the two Tests against West Indies, questions arise on the selection committee's decision to hand him the team's vice-captaincy.

Rohit Sharma Surpasses Sachin Tendulkar In Captaincy Elite List After Win Over West Indies

India registered a comprehensive victory over West Indies in the first Test match in Dominica and as a result, Rohit Sharma leapfrogged legend Sachin Tendulkar in the list of India's most successful Test skippers. This was Rohit's fifth win in 8 matches as skipper while Sachin had just four in 25 encounters. The current Indian team skipper also surpassed Ajinkya Rahane and Ajit Wadekar who have both led India to victory on four occasions. Kohli tops the list with 40 victories from 68 matches while MS Dhoni (27 wins) and Sourav Ganguly (21 wins) are currently second and third respectively.

Mohammad Kaif Has Unflinching Take On 'Best Captain' Question

The India cricket team has had some of the finest leaders over the years. Be it Kapil Dev, Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli or others, many captians have led a lasting impact on the team. While it was Kapil and Dhoni who succeeded in getting India the biggest accolades in the form of World Cups, the likes of Ganguly and Kohli transformed the way India played cricket, especially against big teams. Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif, who led the team's chase in that epic NatWest series triumph against England in 2002, was asked to pick the best captain he played under and he had no hesitation in picking Ganguly's name.

"Don't Perform Well...": Sourav Ganguly's Blunt Take On India's Failures At ICC Events

Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, who turned 51 on Saturday, has explained why Team India struggle to win knockout matches of major events. India have not won a major ICC trophy since 2013 when the MS Dhoni-led side had won the Champions Trophy in England. Since then, the team has lost four finals, and have bowed out in the semi-final on as many occasions. In an interview, Ganguly said that the reason behind India's failures is due to lack of "execution" rather than "mental pressure".
