Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus moved into a politically-charged French Open quarter-final with Ukraine's Elina Svitolina on Sunday and immediately set the tone for the high-profile confrontation by boycotting Roland Garros media for a second time. Australian Open champion and world number two Sabalenka defeated Sloane Stephens 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 to reach the last eight in Paris for the first time. Tuesday's clash will be the third meeting between Sabalenka and Svitolina but first since Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year. Belarus is a key military ally of Moscow.
PARIS : World number two Aryna Sabalenka weathered a spectacular first set implosion to beat American Sloane Stephens 7-6(5) 6-4 on Sunday and advance to the French Open quarter-finals.

Aryna Sabalenka hopes there is a demand for more women’s matches to be played in the evening sessions at the French Open after the second seed put on a show to beat Sloane Stephens. The fans were treated to a spectacle on Philippe-Chatrier as Sabalenka won a topsy turvy match 7-6(5) 6-4 to advance to the quarter-finals.
Tournament director Amelie Mauresmo has addressed the lack of women’s matches in the night sessions of the French Open. The competition was a week old when the first women’s match – Aryna Sabalenka v Sloane Stephens – finally took centre stage on Court Philippe-Chatrier as the late match. Ad It has created plenty of debate with Eurosport expert Mats Wilander describing the situation as “ridiculous”.
Arnya Sabalenka advanced to the quarter-finals of the French Open following a 7-6(5) 6-4 win over Sloane Stephens. In the first match women were given the evening match on Philippe-Chatrier, the fans were certainly given their money’s worth in a thrilling first set. Ad Sabalenka looked to be in total control as she raced into a 5-0 lead with Stephens unable to find her rhythm.
