'We Have Respect For The National Team' - East Bengal Head Coach On Releasing Indian Players For Asian Games

East Bengal head coach Carles Cuadrat has affirmed that his club has respect for the Indian national team and will be releasing players ahead of the upcoming Asian Games. With the 10th season of the Indian Super League set to get underway on September 21, the Games begin a couple of days before at Hangzhou. As the Games act as a qualifying berth for the Paris Olympics 2024, the ISL clubs have been compelled to release some of the Indian players for national duty. Asked about the issue, Cuadrat said during the ISL press meeting here on Wednesday, “We have the calendar, and it's very clear. I've worked with Saudi Arabia's national team in the past, so I know clearly about how the calendar works for the clubs." "Everything is under control. It will remain organized in the football industry across the world." “We have respect for the national team and have sent them a list of players they can use. The clubs and federation (AIFF) must cooperate to do the best for the country." "We have players in the U-23 and the senior team, and we support the national team. There is a list of East Bengal players who can partake in the Asian Games,” he added.

King's Cup: India Squander Chances To Lose 0-1 To Lebanon

A 77th-minute strike by Kaseem Al Zein put paid to India's hopes of retaining the third place in the King's Cup football tournament as Lebanon emerged 1-0 winners on Sunday. Lebanon, who couldn't get the better of India in their last two meetings in Bhubaneswar and Bangalore, proved to be third time lucky despite the Blue Tigers putting immense pressure on the rival defence, especially during the closing stages.

Sunil Chhetri Rested As Igor Stimac Names 23-Member Squad For King's Cup

India will be without skipper Sunil Chhetri in the upcoming King's Cup football tournament and leading the forward line in his absence will be Manvir Singh. Star striker Chhetri has been rested for the tournament so that he could be present for the birth of his first child. The four-nation tournament, which will be played in knockout format, will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand from September 7-10. Chhetri will however be back in the Indian team for the Asian Games. India team head coach Igor Stimac on Tuesday announced a 23-member squad for the 49th edition of the tournament. Manvir will have Rahim Ali and Rahul KP for company upfront. Brandon Fernandes and Suresh Wangjam return to the national side, which looks quite balanced even in Chhetri's absence.

"Really Hope We Get It": Sunil Chhetri Backs Igor Stimac's Plans Ahead Of Asian Cup

Indian captain Sunil Chhetri on Sunday backed head coach Igor Stimac's demand for a four-week camp before the Asian Cup early next year, saying the team needs to have enough preparation time to face the best sides in the continent. The 38-year-old Chhetri, who will be playing his last Asian Cup in Doha (January 12 to February 10), also pitched for at least one international friendly match against a top-seven ranked country in Asia such as Iran, Japan or Saudi Arabia before the continental showpiece. "We are going to face Australia, Uzbekistan and Syria in the Asian Cup (group matches), that is why Stimac (as well as goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu) have spoken about long camps. We need it, and I really hope we get it," Chhetri said in a virtual media interaction.
