Andrey Rublev pushed his ATP winning streak to 10 matches on Sunday, shaking off a slow start to beat Dominik Koepfer 7-5, 6-4 in his second-round opener at the Indian Wells WTA and ATP Masters. Rublev fell 4-2 down before breaking 51st-ranked Koepfer twice to pocket the first set. He finished with 32 winners against the German and won 11 of 15 points at the net to put the match away. But the second set was also close. After breaking for a 4-3 lead, Rublev promptly surrendered his serve, but he broke Koepfer to lead 5-4 and then survived three break points to close it out with a service winner. Rublev, on the rise after titles in Marseille and Dubai this year, next faces Frances Tiafoe, who beat Brandon Nakashima 6-4, 6-4 in an all-American clash.
Amanda Anisimova retired in the middle of her Indian Wells second round match against Leylah Fernandez after failing to convert four match points. The 20-year-old, who beat wildcard Emma Navarro in straight sets to reach the second round, took the opening set 6-2 and was 40-0 and 5-4 up in the second before the US Open finalist came back to take the tie-break 7-0.
