The report cited an email from Nitin Patel, the head of sports science and medicine at the NCA, who told selectors that Iyer was 'fit'. It also quoted Mumbai Cricket Association sources saying that Iyer had cited back pain as the reason behind missing the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal match against Baroda which will begin on Friday.

Mumbai will be without their star batters Shreyas Iyer and Shivam Dube during their Ranji Trophy quarter-final clash against Baroda, according to ESPNcricinfo. According to ESPNcricinfo, Iyer has been ruled out of the quarterfinal clash which will be held on February 23 due to back spasms. While Dube has been ruled out of the game due to a side strain. Iyer featured in one round of the Ranji Trophy this year to gear up for India's five-match Test series against England as he was a part of the squad for the first two games. He was sidelined from the next three games after he registered scores of 27, 29, 35 and 13 in the first two Tests in Visakhapatnam and Hyderabad.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has penned a note to top cricketers, including centrally contracted and India 'A' players, emphasing the importance of domestic cricket for national selection. According to a report in the Indian Express, Shah warned the players that domestic red-ball games remain a "critical yardstick for selection" and non-participation in it will have "severe implications". According to the letter, Shah addressed "the concerning trend of players prioritising the Indian Premier League (IPL) over domestic red-ball cricket".

Emotions ran high in the Indian team's huddle this morning when domestic batting star Sarfaraz Khan and wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel were handed their Test caps on debut, before the start of play for the third Test against England on Thursday. A consistent performer on the domestic circuit for Mumbai, Sarfaraz has been in contention for national selection for a long time but the 26-year-old has had to wait for his chance to break into the Indian Test side. Having received his maiden India call-up earlier in the series, Sarfaraz was in line for debut ever since India lost the services of KL Rahul for this Test and also given that his Mumbai teammate Shreyas Iyer lost his spot and Virat Kohli is unavailable.
