The BCCI on Saturday felicitated Tokyo Olympians, including gold medallist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, with cash awards ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 opener between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Board handed Chopra a cheque of Rs 1 crore while Tokyo Games bronze medal winning boxer Lovlina Borgohain was given Rs 25 lakh for her achievement.

Ricky Ponting has no doubt that flamboyant wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will be a successful India captain if he is handed the responsibility in future. Pant took over the captaincy at IPL franchise Delhi Capitals last season in the absence of an injured Shreyas Iyer, with the Ponting-led team management showing faith in the player. "With some experience in a role like this in such a high-pressure tournament like the IPL, you know, I've got no doubt in years to come there is every chance that Risabh could be international captain. Kolkata Knight Riders coach Brendon McCullum on Friday said their new skipper Shreyas Iyer has all the qualities to be the franchise's "player of the decade". Iyer, who led Delhi Capitals to their maiden IPL final in 2020, was snapped by KKR for Rs 12.25 crore after aggressive bidding and was subsequently made skipper of the two-time former champions.

KKR mentor David Hussey talking to journalists in a media interaction organised by the team called Iyer a born leader. Iyer, who had captained Delhi Capitals in 2020 and taken them to their maiden final, was released after the 2021 season and KKR splurged a whopping Rs. 12.25 crore to acquire the services of the prolific Mumbaikar. KKR were in the hunt for a new captain after they released Eoin Morgan ahead of the players' auction and they looked to Iyer to fulfill that role. "Shreyas is a born leader. Just the way he walks out and sort of commands. He gets all the respect of the players. Knowing Pat (Cummins) really well, he would be a good deputy and good leader amongst the group. He would also lead from the front, but the way Shreyas has captained in the past for Delhi, he has a very good cricketing brain," Hussey said in response to a question by TimesofIndia.com in the media interaction.
