The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Wednesday announced a 16-member squad for the three-match ODI series against West Indies, which begins on July 22. Rohit Sharma and senior players like Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested for the 50-over format. Veteran opening batter Shikhar Dhawan will lead the team and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has been named as the vice-captain.
Shikhar Dhawan was on Wednesday named India captain for the three-match ODI series against the West Indies, beginning on July 22 in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Regular skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant have been rested for the series.
Shikhar Dhawan is currently enjoying a break from his hectic schedule in cricket. Playing for Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, the left-handed opener scored 460 runs in 14 matches to end up as the eighth-highest scorer in the franchise cricket league. He had an average of 38.33 and a strike-rate of 122.66. However, he did not find a place in the India squad for the recently-concluded South Africa series. He does not even feature in the India T20I squad that will play against Ireland later this month.
As India prepare for the 2022 T20 World Cup, they are spoilt for choice in most departments, with several experienced players in good form and newcomers also knocking on the doors with their performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, one player who seems to have been put on the backburner is veteran opener, Shikhar Dhawan. The left-hander, who last played a T20 International (T20I) in June last year against Sri Lanka, wasn't part of the 2021 T20 World Cup and has not been picked for the recently concluded 5-match series against South Africa or the two-match series against Ireland coming up later this month.
Dinesh Karthik on Sunday surpassed former India captain MS Dhoni to become the oldest Indian cricketer to score a T20I half-century. The 37-year-old Indian batter on Friday scored his first half-century in the shortest format of the game for India. Karthik put on a show in Rajkot against South Africa in the 4th T20I of the five-match series as Men in Blue levelled the series 2-2. He smashed 55 off merely 27 deliveries.
India opening batter Shikhar Dhawan might have been overlooked for the upcoming T20I series against South Africa but that has not dimmed his spirits. Known for his jovial nature, Dhawan posted a video on his Instagram handle recently of him riding a horse. Dhawan can be seen wearing a "Cowboy Hat"as he rides the horse. From the looks of it, it seems that Dhawan is quite a regular at horse riding as he looked completely at ease.
The IPL 2022 came to an end on Sunday night as Gujarat Titans clinched the title in their debut season after the side defeated Rajasthan Royals in the IPL final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Hardik Pandya-led side defeated RR by seven wickets and 11 balls to spare to win the title. With the tournament now over, former India captain Sachin Tendulkar picked his T20 Team of the Season and named Hardik Pandya as his skipper.
