Bangladesh win toss, bowl against Afghanistan in World Cup
BAN vs AFG, Cricket World Cup Live: Bangladesh will have their task cut out when they cross swords with Afghanistan in the ICC Cricket World Cup on Saturday in Dharamsala. Bangladesh have always been a competitive side in the white ball formats but for a team that has just witnessed a face-off between two of its biggest players - skipper Shakib al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal -- it will need to do more than just being competitive. Afghanistan, on the other hand, have made huge forward strides as a cricketing nation since getting ICC full membership in 2017. Bangladesh lead in head-to-head, having won nine, while Afghanistan have won six meetings. (Live Scorecard | Points Table)
Bangladesh have always been a competitive side in the white ball formats but face a huge reality check as the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 begins on Thursday, October 4. Like some of their rivals, Bangladesh too would have liked to face that pleasant problem of plenty but right now they are dealing with plenty of problems from injuries to in-house fights. Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has been at loggerheads with opening batter Tamim Iqbal, and branded the former skipper as "childish". Considered the backbone of Bangladesh's golden generation, Shakib, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah are expected to make their swansong at the World Cup.
With the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 set to commence on Thursday, October 5, captains of the all 10 participating teams will gather together in front of media personnel to discuss a range of topics. In the opening match of the tournament, defending champions England will play New Zealand in a repeat of the 2019 World Cup final. Meanwhile, the host nation, India, will open their campaign against Australia in Chennai on October 8. The epic tournament features 10 nations playing 48 matches over 46 days at 10 different venues. The Narendra Modi Stadium -- nearly a third bigger than the Melbourne Cricket Ground -- will be host to five matches, including the final on November 19. Ahead of the Captains Day, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam caught up with his Indian counterpart Rohit Sharma in Ahmedabad.
England vs Bangladesh, Cricket World Cup Warm-Up Match, Highlights: England beat Bangladesh by four wickets courtesy Duckworth-Lewis method in their Cricket World Cup warm-up match. In the match at Guwahati which became a 37-overs-per-side affair, Bangladesh scored 188 for 9 riding on Mehidy Hasan Miraj's 74 off 89 balls. Tanzid Hasan with 45 was the other useful contributor. England used as many as nine bowlers with left-armer Reece Topley taking three wickets. In reply, England's revised target was 197 and they knocked it off in just 24.1 overs. Moeen Ali hit six sixes in his 56 off 39 balls while Jos Buttler hit a quick-fire 15-ball 30.(Scorecard)
Three cricketers, considered the backbone of Bangladesh's golden generation, are expected to make their swansong at the World Cup, after dragging their side up from whipping-boy status over 15 years. When Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad came onto the scene in the mid-2000s, Bangladesh were mostly embarrassing as a national side. But over the years they shed the pushover tag, especially in one-day internationals -- the format used in the World Cup starting in India next week.
Bangladesh handed Sri Lanka a crushing seven-wicket defeat in their first warm-up match of the ICC ODI World Cup in Guwahati on Friday to make a winning start. Chasing 264, Bangladesh rode on half-centuries from top-order batters Tanzid Hasan (84), Litton Das (61) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (67 not out) to romp home in 42 overs at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium. Hasan cracked 10 fours and two sixes to make a sturdy 84 off 88 balls, while Das hit 10 fours in his 56-ball 61. The two batters added 131 for the opening wicket.
Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan wants to call time on his illustrious international career after the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan. He has also asserted that while he plans to retire from Tests following the forthcoming ICC Cricket World Cup in India starting next month, he is also likely to quit T20Is after the ICC T20 World Cup next year in West Indies and the United States of America. Talking to T-Sports, as reported by ESPNCricinfo, Shakib said, "The 2025 Champions Trophy for ODIs and the 2024 T20 World Cup for T20Is. Tests may be sooner. Maybe (after the World Cup)." "I will retire all at once, but I will stop playing each format one by one. I will announce my retirement after the 2025 Champions Trophy." Shakib will be leading Bangladesh during the World Cup, having also captained the side during the Asia Cup earlier this month in Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
