Pakistan Selectors Decide To Take Massive Gamble On Injured Star For Champions Trophy 2025 Squad

Pakistan selectors have decided to include opener Saim Ayub, who is recuperating from a right ankle injury, in the provisional squad for the Champions Trophy beginning next month. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has not disclosed the squad officially but it contains most of the premier stars such as Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, Nasim Shah, Fakhar Zaman and Shadab Khan. An insider said the selectors included Saim as they feel even if he is not recovered in time to play the ICC showpiece he can be replaced by another player.

The future of Pakistan's premier fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi in red-ball cricket has come under a cloud after he was sidelined for the two-Test series against the West Indies at home. Shaheen has now either been dropped, sidelined or “rested” for eight out of Pakistan's last 12 Tests since early 2024. The left-arm pacer with 116 wickets from 32 Tests was also not selected for the two-Test series in South Africa with the selectors giving the explanation that they wanted him fresh for the ICC Champions Trophy starting February 19.

A power-packed innings by David Miller and a career-best all-round performance by George Linde took South Africa to an 11-run win in the first T20I century against Pakistan at Kingsmead on Friday. Miller slammed 82 off 40 balls with four fours and eight sixes and Linde hit a rapid 48 in a South African total of 183 for nine. Left-arm spinner Linde followed up by taking four for 21. Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan hit 74 and his team were still in with a chance of winning until he was caught off the second ball of the final over.

Former cricketer Basit Ali has questioned the inclusion of Babar Azam in Pakistan's squads for South Africa tour and star pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi being dropped from the Test fold. Pakistan unveiled its squads for the multi-format tour of South Africa which will kick off on December 10 in Durban. A couple of surprises came along with the decision as Babar returned to the Test side after being dropped from the second and third Tests against England. While Shaheen, who was also dropped alongside the former Pakistan skipper, still remains sidelined from the red-ball cricket. Basit criticised the selection committee's decision to include Babar and dropping Shaheen from the Test side.

Babar Azam on Monday surpassed Virat Kohli to rise to the second spot in the list of highest run-scorers in T20Is. Virat Kohli has 4188 runs in 117 innings while Babar Azam has 4192 runs in 119 innings. India captain Rohit Sharma leads the list with 4231 runs in 151 innings. Babar Azam achieved the feat during a match against Australia. With Rohit having retired from T20Is, Babar Azam is expected to surpass him in the list very soon.
