Shaheen Afridi Returns For Sri Lanka Tests; Mohammad Huraira, Aamir Jamal Earn Maiden Call Ups

Star pacer Shaheen Afridi was on Saturday named in Pakistan's squad for the Test series in Sri Lanka next month while Muhammad Huraira and Aamir Jamal received maiden call-ups in the longer version. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) also announced that former pacer Morne Morkel has been appointed as the bowling coach. The ex-South African quick has signed a six-month contract. The 16-member squad, led by Babar Azam, will play two Tests in Sri Lanka, which will kickoff Pakistan's campaign in the third ICC World Test Championship cycle.

Nottinghamshire registered a victory by five wickets over Lancashire in their previous T20 Blast 2023 match on Sunday. Playing at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire bundled out Lancashire at 145 after Matthew Carter took a three-wicket haul. Shaheen Afridi may be well known for his brilliant bowling performances but it was his batting prowess that was in full display during the fourth ODI between Pakistan and New Zealand on Friday. The left-hander thrashed Blair Tickner for 22 runs in the final over of the Pakistan innings and ended his innings on 23 off just 7 deliveries. Shaheen started the over with a six off the second ball and followed it up with a power boundary through the cover region. The next ball again went long as he heaved it over long-on and although the next one was a duck, the final ball travelled into the stands behind mid-wicket.

Babar Azam scored a superb century Friday to help lift Pakistan to the top of the one-day international rankings after a thumping 102-run victory in the fourth match against New Zealand in Karachi. Azam smashed a 117-ball 107 and also became the fastest batter to reach 5,000 ODI runs, as his team made 334-6 in their 50 overs. His 18th ODI hundred took him past the mark in his 97th innings in the format, beating former South Africa batter Hashim Amla's previous record of 101 innings. New Zealand were bowled out for 232 in 43.4 overs with skipper Tom Latham (60), Mark Chapman (46) and Daryl Mitchell (34) offering some resistance.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam on Friday became the fastest batter to complete 5,000 one-day international runs to lift his team to 334-6 in the fourth match against New Zealand in Karachi. The 28-year-old beat South African Hashim Amla's record during his 117-ball 107 for his 18th ODI hundred after New Zealand won the toss and sent the home team in to bat at National Stadium. When Azam reached 19 in his 97th innings in 99 one-day internationals he completed 5,000 runs, improving on Amla's feat of reaching the milestone in 101 innings from 104 matches. Azam added 50 for the second wicket with Shan Masood (44), 127 for the fourth wicket with Agha Salman (58) and another 41 for the sixth with Iftikhar Ahmed who scored 28.
