After all the anger and bloodletting of Pakistan’s premature exit from the T20 World Cup, there was a hint of perspective. Maybe even a little sympathy.
Pakistan cricket team had a disappointing outing in T20 World Cup 2024 as the Babar Azam-led crashed out in the group stages of the competition with losses against United States and India. Pakistan slumped to a shock defeat against United States before losing to India in a thriller. While they did win their games against Canada and Ireland, it was not enough. Pakistan cricketers' dismal run led to criticism from both fans as well as experts and according to media reports, even head coach Gary Kirsten 'lashed out' at the players regarding their fitness standards and the lack of unity in the side.
Former India batter Virender Sehwag has lashed out Pakistan amid criticism over the Babar Azam-led side's Elimination from the T20 World Cup. Despite Pakistan bowing out with a win in their final group game against Ireland, Sehwag questioned the team's future. After restricting Ireland to 106/9, Pakistan too had difficulties while chasing as they lost seven wickets before captain Babar Azam played a composed knock to see the side through. While analysing the match, Sehwag questioned Pakistan's approach while chasing small totals against relatively weaker teams.
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar joked that Babar Azam should be replaced by former Pakistan cricketer Ramiz Raja as captain. Speaking on Star Sports, Manjrekar came up with the witty idea in a discussion about Pakistan's future, after they were eliminated in the group stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup. A lot of criticism has surrounded Babar Azam's performance and leadership, with many experts calling for the removal of the 29-year-old from captaincy. Manjrekar added to it with a twist of his own.
Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has lashed out at Babar Azam for accepting the captaincy role after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) sacked Shaheen Afridi after just one series. Babar, who had stepped down as captain after the ODI World Cup last year, was re-appointed as the skipper for the T20 World Cup. This came after Shaheen lost his captaincy after a 4-1 series loss away at New Zealand. It proved to be Shaheen's first and last series as captain. Babar led the team during the home series against New Zealand and the away series against England ahead of the T20 World Cup.

Following Pakistan's earlier than expected exit from the T20 World Cup, reports have emerged that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is likely to take some strict actions against the players. While some reports have claimed that the board is set to sack 8-9 players from the current squad, others suggested that the cricketers face the risk of having their central contracts reviewed and their salaries potentially reduced. Even PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi, after the loss the India, suggested that a "major surgery", added that board might have to "look beyond" the current players in the squad.
