Ahead Of WPL 2025, Delhi Capitals Skipper Meg Lanning Wants Shafali Varma To Play Freely

Delhi Capitals' skipper Meg Lanning on Tuesday hoped explosive India opener Shafali Varma will carry her recent rich vein of form in domestic cricket into the third season of the Women's Premier League starting on Friday. Shafali, who was dropped from the Indian team for the away tour to Australia in November 2024, made excellent outings for Haryana in domestic matches recently to signal her return to run-making ways. “She looks like she's in really good touch and enjoying herself and having fun too, which I think is really important. For me, just watching her play with freedom, express herself, (and) when she does that, that plays a really important role for our team,” Lanning said during the pre-tournament press meet of the Capitals.

Bengal Team Scripts History With 'World Record Chase' In 50-Over Cricket

Bengal's women's cricket team made history on Monday by completing the highest successful run chase in women's One-Day Cricket. They achieved this during the Senior Women's Trophy 2024 match against Haryana at the Niranjan Shah Stadium Ground C in Rajkot. It is a record in List-A women's cricket. Bengal players chased 390 and surpassed the previous record held by Northern Districts, who had chased down 309 runs against Canterbury in a 2019 New Zealand domestic match. On the international stage, Sri Lanka previously held the record with their chase of 305 runs against South Africa earlier this year. The highest domestic one-day score before Bengal's triumph was 356/4, set by Railways against Chandigarh in 2021.

Harmanpreet Kaur Backs 'Dropped' Shafali Verma To Return To "Zone" Ahead Of ODI World Cup At Home

Shafali Verma, dropped from the India ODI squad, has the full backing of skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, who is eager to see the aggressive opener back in her "zone" ahead of Women's World Cup at home next year. Apart from Shafali, India will not have the services of wicketkeeper-batter Yastika Bhatia who suffered a wrist injury during the Women's Big Bash League. "She (Shafali) is a very important player for us and has done exceptionally well for the country. We are looking forward to seeing her get back into her zone and perform well for the team," Harmanpreet said on the eve of their series-opener against Australia.

India Shake Up Batting Order, Drop Out-Of-Form Star For Australia ODI Series

Top-order batter Shafali Verma was on Tuesday dropped from India's 16-member women's team for the three-match ODI series in Australia in December after a string of poor performances in the past year. The BCCI selectors seem to have once again lost patience with the 20-year-old right-handed batter, whose recent ODI form has been disappointing. Shafali has scored just 108 runs in six matches this year with 33 being the highest. She was dropped in December last year from the team midway during the home ODI series against Australia on the basis of her poor run, before making a comeback against South Africa in June this year in Bengaluru.

Smriti Mandhana Surpasses Mithali Raj To Script History As India Clinch ODI Series vs New Zealand

Charismatic India batter Smriti Mandhana finally played a knock befitting her calibre as India defeated New Zealand by six wickets in the deciding game to seal the three-match Women's ODI series 2-1 on Tuesday. Mandhana (100 off 122 balls), who wasn't able to showcase her class at the top of the order in the two previous games, made her 8th ODI hundred century, the most by an Indian in the forma. India coasted to the 233 run target in 44.2 overs. New Zealand had recovered to reach 232 for five from a precarious 88/5 courtesy Brooke Halliday (86 off 96 deliveries).
