SUZUKA, Japan (AP) — Pierre Gasly has been released by Red Bull and freed to end his contract with the junior team, AlphaTauri, and will move to Alpine next season in Formula One.
It’s a matter of when rather than if Max Verstappen will win the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship as the Dutchman is on the verge to make it back-to-back titles at this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix. He had his first opportunity to wrap up the championship at the Singapore Grand Prix, but he had a disappointing race after misjudging an overtake on Lando Norris which saw him drop to the back before he recovered to seventh place. Ad Only Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez can stop Verstappen from winning the title, as they trail him by 104 and 106 points respectively with a possible 138 points left from the five remaining events.
George Russell led Lewis Hamilton in a Mercedes one-two in a wet second practice session for the Japanese Grand Prix. The high-speed Suzuka circuit and the harder tyre compounds were expected to play into Mercedes’ hands, although the conditions are likely to not be representative for the predicted dry weather for qualifying on Saturday. Ad Hamilton is looking for his first victory in 2022 to maintain his streak of winning a race in every season he’s competed in since making his Formula 1 debut in 2007.
George Russell topped the timesheets in FP2 at the Japanese Grand Prix, with Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton in P2.
Fernando Alonso went fastest in a wet FP1 session ahead of the two Ferrari cars of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc.
