Serena Williams ranks alongside such icons as Muhammad Ali among the greatest legends in sport, retired US tennis stars John McEnroe and Chris Evert said on Wednesday. Speaking ahead of their ESPN commentary duties for the US Open that begins on Monday, Evert hailed 23-time Grand Slam champion Williams, who is likely to retire after this year's Grand Slam showdown in New York. McEnroe gave Serena the GOAT label -- as in Greatest of All Time.
Serena Williams says she had «tears streaming down» her face as she wrote her farewell letter to fans, and expects to feel similar emotions during the upcoming US Open — her probable final career tournament. Williams revealed her decision to «evolve away» from tennis on August 9, citing a wish to grow her family and concentrate on her burgeoning business career. Ad As such, an appearance in New York will bring the curtain down on her illustrious career that has yielded 23 Grand Slam singles titles, and 50 more besides.
It seems as though Serena Williams is looking to give herself the best possible chance at glory next week when she plays at what will likely be her final tennis tournament.
