NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams is not ready to say goodbye just yet. Nor, clearly, are her fans.
Serena Williams, indicated to the world that the tennis icon largely acknowledged to be the greatest female tennis player of all time has decided to bring the curtain down on what has been a phenomenal career. The ongoing US Open was seen as her last dance. But after her first round win on Monday against Danka Kovinic in straight sets Serena decided to let the suspense continue. When asked -'Will this definitely be your final tournament?', the 23 time singles Grand Slam champion replied -'Yeah, I have been pretty vague about it, right? I am going to stay vague because you never know.' You never know indeed.
A record opening crowd of roaring fans packed out the Arthur Ashe Stadium to watch Serena Williams play her final US Open last night.

The 19-year-old beat Leylah Fernandez 6-4 6-3 in last year’s final to seal an incredible triumph, coming through 10 matches as a qualifier without dropping a set. Since that remarkable Grand Slam success at Flushing Meadows, she has experienced a dip in form and struggled to progress further than the second round in each of the three Grand Slams played this year.
For Serena Williams, her very essence can be summed up in nine short words: “expecting the best from myself and proving people wrong.”
