Rory McIlroy believes he has never been a more "complete" player and is confident he can double his tally of worldwide victories this year.
Jon Rahm held off rookie Davis Thompson to win his second PGA Tour title this year at The American Express in California.
Jon Rahm and Davis Thompson are tied in their duel heading into the final round of the American Express at La Quinta County Club in California.
Davis Thompson took a two-stroke lead over world number four Jon Rahm and four others at La Quinta, California, on Thursday. The 23-year-old American shot a career-low 10-under 62 in the first round of The American Express after he birdied three of the first four holes and then eagled both par-5s on the front nine, numbers five and six. He made the turn in eight-under 28, the lowest front-nine score at La Quinta, putting him two clear of Spain's Rahm, Americans Tyler Duncan, Taylor Montgomery and Sam Burns, and Matti Schmid of Germany. Rahm shot 64 at La Quinta, one of three courses being used for the first three rounds. The field also includes five of the top seven players in the world and 10 of the top 20. Sixth-ranked Xander Schauffele, of the US, was in a group of nine at seven-under 65 after also eagling the fifth.
KAPALUA: Jon Rahm began the bold new year on the PGA Tour by coming from seven shots behind to win the Sentry Tournament of Champions on Sunday with plenty of help from Collin Morikawa, who had a spectacular wipeout even by Maui standards.
Collin Morikawa reached the midpoint of the Sentry Tournament of Champions on Friday without making a bogey, and he holds a two-shot lead in Kapalua, Hawaii with Seamus Power sitting seven shots off the lead after a second-round 69.
