Two-Time IPL Winner Leading Race To Replace Gautam Gambhir As KKR Mentor: Report

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ended a 10-year Indian Premier League (IPL) drought earlier this season, beating SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) in a one-sided final. Prior to this season, KKR had last won an IPL trophy in 2014 back when Gautam Gambhir was the captain of the team. Incidentally, Gambhir made his return to KKR ahead of IPL 2024, joining the franchise as a mentor from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). However, months after masterminding KKR's IPL triumph, Gambhir left the role to join the Indian men's cricket team as its head coach in July earlier this year.

Former India head coach Rahul Dravid has taken up a new challenge while also making his return to the Indian Premier League (IPL), signing up as head coach of Rajasthan Roayls. Dravid, who left the India head coach job after guiding the team to the T20 World Cup 2024 success, made himself available for IPL assignments. Dravid didn't want to take up a full-time assignment that demands his commitment for 8-10 months a year but was keen to return to IPL and take up a job that only needs him to be present for 2-3 months in a year.

India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson is one of those players, who frequently get overlooked by the selectors. The Rajasthan Royals skipper, who made his international debut in 2015, was also snubbed from the Asia Cup 2023 and ODI World Cup 2023 squad. He was later named in India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad but did not play a single match. Recently, he was a part of the Indian team which faced Sri Lanka in three-match T20I series, where he played two matches but could not score even a single run.
