The Indian tennis icon played the final match of her 20-year professional career earlier in the day, losing alongside Madison Keys 6-4, 6-0 to Russian pair Liudmila Samsonova and Veronika Kudermetova at the Dubai Open. A former doubles world number one and six-time Grand Slam champion in doubles and mixed doubles, 36-year-old Mirza's trailblazing journey has inspired countless young people from her country to take up tennis.
A glorious chapter and an illustrious career came to an end in Indian sport on Tuesday as Sania Mirza played her last match as a professional tennis player at the WTA Dubai Duty Free Championships. Sania, who is one of the greatest tennis players ever to emerge from India, closed her glorious career with a first round defeat, losing the contest in straight sets with American partner Madison Keys in Dubai Tuesday. Sania and Keys lost 4-6 0-6 to the formidable Russian pair of Vernokia Kudermetova and Liudmila Samsonova in exactly one hour. The 25-year-old Veronika is ranked 11th in singles and number five in the doubles while Liudmila is world number 13 in doubles.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have appointed tennis legend Sania Mirza as the team's mentor for WPL 2023. Mirza, who has won six Grand Slam titles and 43 WTA Titles, will be working with the side ahead of the inaugural season of the tournament and according to the franchise, she is "someone whom the players can relate and respond to easily in a team environment”. RCB had a brilliant outing at the WPL Auction as they were able to buy the likes of Smriti Mandhana, Ellyse Perry and Richa Ghosh. It was an exceptionally special moment for Mandhana who went for a record amount of Rs 3.4 crore.
