With Rohit Sharma announcing his retirement from Test cricket and Virat Kohli communicating the same intent to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), one or two spots in the team for the longest format are set to open up ahead of the England tour. Though skipper Rohit's exit has already been confirmed, the BCCI is doing all it can to make Kohli reconsider his decision. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee, however, has already been tasked with the responsibility of finding replacements for the veteran duo. One name that has emerged at the top of the wishlist is Sai Sudharsan, Gill's teammate at his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Gujarat Titans.

Former India chief selector MSK Prasad feels the presence of Arshdeep Singh, Sai Sudharsan and Kuldeep Yadav is a must in the squad for the five-match Test series in England beginning June 20. In a recent interview, former India head coach Ravi Shastri too had thrown his weight behind Sudharsan, who is in the middle of a stellar IPL and has experience of playing county cricket. Speaking to PTI, Prasad, who was in charge of selection committee from 2016 to 2020, also gave his reasons on why Arshdeep and Kuldeep have to be there in the squad. He would have the in-form Prasidh Krishna over Akash Deep among the five pacers to be picked in case the selectors pick a 15-man squad to be announced in the middle of May. Following the retirement of R Ashwin, Washingston Sundar will be his spin bowling all-rounder alongside Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep who the former chief selector sees as a genuine wicket-taker even in pace friendly English conditions.

Sudharsan is having a prolific IPL 2025 season and has scored 504 runs in 10 games for Gujarat Titans, including five half-centuries. His sublime touch is one of the reasons behind Gujarat's rise in the tournament. "I've always looked up to Shubman in these three years. If I have difficulty in the nets or difficulty facing somebody, I will have a conversation with him on what he feels I can do better. I've grown a lot because of him and by watching him play. Mentally, he's a very competitive captain. And I feel he understands what the player needs. He is somebody who will give players who are facing difficulties a comfort zone, where they can come back stronger. We've shared a lot of memories on the field as well. Hopefully, we create lovely memories this season too," Sudharsan said on JioHotstar's 'Gen Bold'.
