Ahead of Virat Kohli's 100th Test match, his childhood coach Raj Kumar Sharma recalled the day when the batter got selected for Team India. As India take on Sri Lanka in the first Test of the two-match series, batter Virat Kohli will achieve the milestone of playing 100 matches in the longest format. "I still remember the day when Virat came to my East Delhi cricket academy for the first time. He was a naughty boy who was very enthusiastic and eager to play. While coaching him, I realised that he has a lot of potentials and was different from others. I still remember the day of June 2011 when he called me and said that he got selected for the Indian Test team. It was a very emotional moment and we hugged each other and now finally he will be playing his 100th Test match," Raj Kumar Sharma told ANI.
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan on Thursday congratulated Virat Kohli ahead of his 100th test appearance, saying that he made everyone fall in love with the longest format all over again. "Test cricket was limping and that's when it found a magical physio in Virat Kohli. He came, He conquered and He made everyone love test cricket all over again! Congratulations @imVkohli on your remarkable achievement," tweeted Irfan.
Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli formed a formidable partnership during their time at the helm of Indian cricket in the recent years gone by. Such was their domination in Test cricket that the Test team achieved heights never seen before in foreign conditions. All this, though, wouldn't have been possible without their camaraderie off the field where both shared a strong bond. With Shastri's departure post the T20 World Cup in 2021, the much-feared captain-coach partnership was finally broken. However, both showcase their respect and admiration for each other whenever possible.
Former Indian cricketers including the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, the Board of Control for Cricket in India president Sourav Ganguly and head coach of the Indian cricket team Rahul Dravid paid their tribute and wished luck to Virat Kohli, welcoming him to the "100-Test club." Kohli has so far played 99 Tests for India and will be eager to get out on the field in Indian whites for the 100th time on Friday in Mohali where India will take on Sri Lanka in the first Test.
All set to become the 12th Indian to achieve the milestone of playing 100 Tests, star batter Virat Kohli says he "never thought" he would come this far and make this landmark appearance. Having scored only 4 and 15 in his debut Test against the West Indies in 2011, Kohli has come a long way in a decade-long journey in which he has amassed 7962 runs at a stellar average of 50.39 in the longest format. Kohli's 100th Test will be against Sri Lanka beginning here on Friday.
Ganguly knows how momentous an occasion it would be for Virat Kohli when he steps out to play his 100th Test on Friday but the BCCI boss and former national captain is confident that the superstar batter will celebrate greater milestones going forward in his career. In a video message shared by the BCCI's official Twitter handle, Ganguly congratulated Kohli, saying it would be a dream come true moment for him when he takes the field against Sri Lanka in the opening Test here.
