Top-ranked Scottie Scheffler captured his first major title on Sunday by winning the Masters in dominating fashion, holding firm down the stretch to seize the green jacket after Tiger Woods completed his comeback from severe leg injuries. Scheffler fired a final-round one-under-par 71 to finish 72 holes on 10-under 278 and defeat four-time major winner Rory McIlroy by three strokes with Australian Cameron Smith and Ireland's Shane Lowry sharing third on 283. "It was a long day, a tough day for me," Scheffler said. "I just tried to keep my head down and execute my shots."
Scottie Scheffler extended his remarkable winning run with major glory at The Masters, his fourth victory in just six starts, but is the world No 1 getting enough recognition for his dominant start to 2022?
AUGUSTA, Ga. : Rory McIlroy matched the lowest final round in Masters history on Sunday, an eight-under-par 64 that earned a runner-up finish behind Scottie Scheffler at the Masters.
He may have fallen short in his quest for a second green jacket, but South African golfer Charl Schwartzel is laughing all the way to the bank after his efforts at the Masters over the weekend.
Scottie Scheffler seemed unhurried. Calm and composed, knowing exactly what to do. The genial smile accompanied by the laughs at the press conference defined the belief in himself and the faith he has embraced. Emotions seemed to get the better of him only when he was giving his speech at the Green Jacket ceremony. “I never got this far in my dreams,” he said. Scheffler finished 10-under with Rory McIlroy second at 7-under, still ruing the missed putts but exulting in his 64, the day’s best and his best finish at the Masters. It included an eagle on 13th and a hole out from the bunker on 18th. Playing partner Morikawa (-4) did the same at the same holes and was fifth. Lowry finished 5-under despite the crippling triple on fourth. Smith was playing with Scheffler but towards the end he was a million miles behind at 5-under. Smith and Lowry tied for third.
