HOYLAKE: Royal Liverpool's fearsome-looking new 17th hole was relatively docile during Thursday's first round of The Open but the par-three is likely to bare its teeth before Sunday's conclusion.
HOYLAKE, United Kingdom: Home favorite Tommy Fleetwood joined South African amateur Christo Lamprecht at the top of the leaderboard after hitting a five-under-par 66 on the opening day of the Open Championship at Hoylake. Lamprecht shone on his debut at the majors after earning his place by winning the Amateur Championship last month. The powerful 22-year-old, who stands 6 feet 8 inches (2.03 meters) tall, used his long levers to great effect around the Royal Liverpool course on Thursday. “I earned my spot to be here. I think the way I played today I earned to be on the top of the leaderboard, as of now,” said Lamprecht. Fleetwood, who hails from Southport, just 30 miles (48 kilometers) from the course, gave his chances of a first major title win a huge boost with a run of three consecutive birdies between the 14th and 16th. “Such a special opportunity to play so close to home,” said the world number 21. “To have that support and play an Open, (I’m) glad I gave them some good golf to watch.” Despite the glorious blue skies on the Wirral coastline, many of the stellar names in the field struggled at the 151st Open.
HOYLAKE, England — Nine years ago, the resplendent orange Rickie Fowler wore against the backdrop of Hoylake's cement-colored palate seemed like it glowed a little brighter. At the 2014 Open Championship, Fowler was still in his mid 20s, wearing a flat-billed, white and orange Puma hat with his website stitched on, sporting a golf swing that was far flatter, and a putter head that was much smaller.
South African amateur Christo Lamprecht took a surprise clubhouse lead on the first morning of the 151st Open Championship at Hoylake on Thursday.
HOYLAKE, England : Englishman Matthew Jordan said it was an "amazing honour" to hit the opening tee shot of the 151st British Open on Thursday at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, where he has been a member since the age of seven.
Former British Open champion Shane Lowry has expressed his determination to double his major tally and join the list of Irish winners at Royal Liverpool.
COURCHEVEL FRANCE: Jonas Vingegaard climbed into a rock-solid lead in the Tour de France on Wednesday as his main rival Tadej Pogacar lost almost six minutes on the toughest climb on the 21 stages.
