Ineos Grenadiers’ Tom Pidcock jumped into a public fountain to cool off after he finished Stage 15 at the Tour de France. The 202.5km stage was done during an intense heatwave from Rodes to Carcassone. Romain Bardet (DSM) has said the sweltering heat at this year’s Tour de France is something he’s never experienced before. Michael Matthews completed a vintage ride to win the 14th stage of the Tour de France on Saturday, a hilly trek from Saint Etienne to Mende, as Jonas Vingegaard held off defending champion Tadej Pogacar to retain the yellow jersey. Matthews went solo from the day's breakaway with 51 kilometres to go, and after being caught by a trio of chasers he attacked again on the final ascent, a brutal 3-km effort at 10.2%. Alberto Bettiol managed to rein him in once more, only for Matthews to come back and go solo again to beat the Italian by 15 seconds.
After three consecutive days of gruelling climbs in scorching heat, the Tour returns to relative serenity on Stage 13. With three climbs building throughout the day from the 2.4km Cote de Brie to the 6.6km Cote de Saint-Romain-en-Gal, Stage 13 has plenty of points on offer in the fight for the green jersey. The summit finish of the famed Alpe d’Huez was always going to be a show of the highest order at the Tour de France, cheered on enthusiastically by the teeming Bastille Day crowds.
Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) has said some fans are “too crazy” following a lively finale on Alpe d'Huez during Stage 12 of the Tour de France. Britain’s Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) became the youngest winner in history on Alpe d’Huez at the Tour after lighting up the stage, with Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) snuffing out attacks from Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) to keep yellow. Tom Pidcock became the youngest ever winner of a Tour de France stage on the Alpe d’Huez ahead of a rejuvenated Chris Froome while Jonas Vingegaard defended his new status as race leader as one of cycling’s most famous climbs once again delivered drama.
