Carlos Alcaraz's rise in tennis is good for the sport but people must stop comparing the two Spaniards and let his teenaged compatriot enjoy his career without the pressure of having to live up to their expectations. Alcaraz, 19, emerged as the next big Grand Slam contender after he beat his idol Nadal and Novak Djokovic en route to the Madrid title last week, his second Masters title after winning the Miami Open in March. Elina Svitolina of Ukraine said on Wednesday she will skip the French Open, telling AFP the Russian invasion of her country had been "draining". "Unfortunately this year is going to be the year that I'm going to miss it," Svitolina replied when asked if she would play at Roland Garros, which runs from May 22 to June 5.

Rafael Nadal's uncle, Toni Nadal, has named Carlos Alcaraz one of the favourites to win the French Open after his recent success in Masters 1000 tournaments. The prospect of a Nadal vs Alcaraz rematch at Roland Garros is enough to make the mouth drool as the latter continues his rise as one of tennis' most promising young stars.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gilles Simon have been handed wild cards to play in the main draw at the French Open, organisers said Tuesday. A former Australian Open runner-up, Tsonga announced earlier this season that he will retire after the clay-court Grand Slam event. Play begins at Roland Garros on May 22. Simon said he is retiring at the end of the season after 20 years of playing professional tennis.
