Rune, just 19 and ranked 40, swept to a memorable 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over the 2021 runner-up on the back of 54 winners and will face Norway's eighth seed Casper Ruud for a place in the semi-finals. The last Danish man to reach the last-eight at any Slam was Jan Leschly in the 1967 US Championships. "I have strong belief in myself that if I really focus and play my tennis, I can beat almost everybody on tour," said Rune.

Spaniard Nadal had won the French Open four years in a row before losing to eventual champion Djokovic in the semi-finals last year - just the third time he had been beaten at the claycourt major since his debut in 2005. That was also the last of the 58 career showdowns between the pair and Djokovic has looked in peak form at this year's tournament, having not dropped a set in his four rounds.
The so-called 'next generation' of men’s tennis is in danger of being usurped by an even younger breed at this year’s French Open after Stefanos Tsitsipas was sent packing by Danish teenager Holger Rune.
