NEW DELHI : Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant will lead India in the home Twenty20 series against South Africa after KL Rahul was ruled out with a groin injury on Wednesday.
South Africa are bracing for a formidable bowling attack from an Indian side eager to prove themselves when their Twenty20 series begins under New Delhi's scorching summer sun, skipper Temba Bavuma said Wednesday. The touring side will play the first of five matches on Thursday as focus remains on the short format ahead of this year's T20 World Cup. India have traditionally relied on their spinners on home turf but up-and-coming pace bowlers Avesh Khan and uncapped Umran Malik have kept up the country's fast bowling stocks.
KL Rahul, who was supposed to lead India in the upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa, has been ruled out due to an injury, BCCI informed through a tweet on Wednesday. Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav has also been ruled out of the series owing to injury. Wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant is going to lead India in the series now. Hardik Pandya has been appointed vice-captain.
India's upcoming T20I series against South Africa will be a test for "captain" KL Rahul. With the likes of skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli being rested for the five-match series, Rahul will lead Team India while Rishabh Pant will be his deputy. This will be the first time that Rahul will be leading Team India in the shortest format. Having been impressed by Rahul's leadership during IPL, where he guided Lucknow Super Giants to the playoffs, former India pacer Irfan Pathan said that the batter has improved as a captain.
India take on South Africa in the first game of the five-match Twenty20 International (T20I) series on Thursday. The match will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi. India have some big names like Virat Kohli, captain Rohit Sharma and fast-bowling ace Jasprit Bumrah missing and the T20I series will be an opportunity for a fair few to make an impression, especially looking ahead to the T20 World Cup this year in Australia. Two names that fans and everyone else concerned will be keeping a keen eye on will be Dinesh Karthik and Umran Malik. Both were exceptional in IPL 2022 and will be hoping to replicate those performances on the international stage.
The Men in Blue are on a 12-match winning streak and come Thursday, they can create an all-time record of winning 13 T20I games in a row. However, for head coach Rahul Dravid, the primary aim over the next 10 days will be to narrow down on a core group of players going into the World Cup in October. And he couldn't have hoped for a better opposition than a gritty South African side which has seen its stock rise recently. With likes of skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli rested for the series, stand in captain KL Rahul is a certainty at the top but it would be a tough choice between Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan as his opening partner.
Rahul Dravid has always maintained that he likes continuity and gave clear hints on Tuesday that pace sensation Umran Malik might have to wait for his turn. Dravid was speaking ahead of the first of five-match T20 International series between India and South Africa here on Thursday.
Rahul Dravid on Tuesday said that it would be unfair to expect every player to be available all the time. Dravid's comments come after regular captain Rohit Sharma, senior batter Virat Kohli and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah were rested from the upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa, starting from Thursday.
