The fast bowler has been preferred as captain to Virat Kohli, even though the former India skipper is in the squad. Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant has been named as Bumrah's vice-captain at Edgbaston.

The series decider begins in Birmingham on Friday. There was suspense over Rohit Sharma's availability after head coach Rahul Dravid told the media that he was not yet "ruled out" on Wednesday. The announcement that Bumrah will lead in Rohit's absence came just moments ahead of the captain's press conference on the eve of the match. Wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant has been named the vice-captain for the match.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) finally put an end to the suspense surrounding India captain Rohit Sharma's availability for the Edgbaston Test vs England. A BCCI release on Thursday stated that Rohit had returned a positive COVID-19 test on Thursday morning and as a result paceman Jasprit Bumrah was going to lead India in the match, with wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant as his deputy. Immediately after the release was sent, former India opening batter Wasim Jaffer put out a tweet with his India playing XI for the match.
India were leading the five-match series 2-1 when multiple Covid-19 cases in their camp led to the postponement of the final game which was a part of the World Test Championship.
