Shikhar Dhawan leads the team in the three-match ODI series against the West Indies, beginning here on Friday. Ben Stokes' surprise announcement from ODIs has fuelled the growing debate on hectic international scheduling, especially bilateral cricket. The premier English all-rounder made it clear that playing all three formats regularly is not sustainable anymore. Sandwiched between Tests and T20Is, ODI cricket has been jostling for space for a while now.
West Indies and India commence a three-match One-Day International series at Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad on Friday with the visitors, even without their most prominent players, favoured to get the better of a struggling home side. Fresh from a 2-1 series triumph in England, India have opted to rest regular captain Rohit Sharma, key batter Virat Kohli, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, all-rounder Hardik Pandya and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. That presents an opportunity for talented and eager fringe players to make the most of the stars' absences at the expense of a team that was swept 3-0 by Bangladesh in Guyana the previous week.
India captain Rohit Sharma on Tuesday shared a picture with former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh on Instagram. The two are all smiles as they hug each other in the picture. "Met my long lost friend after ages," Rohit captioned the picture, with a heart-eyes emoji. Yuvraj Singh responded to the picture and wrote "My brothaman". However, former India spinner Harbhajan Singh, who has played his fair share of cricket with both Rohit and Yuvraj, gatecrashed their bromance with a hilarious comment, trolling the latter.
Team India arrived in Trinidad on Wednesday ahead of their white-ball series against West Indies, which is scheduled to start from Friday. Shikhar Dhawan, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shreyas Iyer, Avesh Khan, Ishan Kishan and Mohammed Siraj were some of the players seen at the hotel along with the rest of the squad. "Trinidad - WE ARE HERE!" tweeted BCCI. India and West Indies will square off in three one-day internationals (ODIs) from July 22 to July 27. The five-match T20I series will start on July 29 and will conclude on August 7.
Shikhar Dhawan, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shreyas Iyer, Avesh Khan, Ishan Kishan and Mohammed Siraj were some of the players seen at the airport along with the rest of the squad. "Trinidad - WE ARE HERE! #TeamIndia | #WIvIND," tweeted BCCI.
After winning the three-match ODI series against England, the Indian cricket team is off to the Tour of West Indies. The Rahul Dravid-coached team will play three ODIs and five T20Is against the Windies. As India look to get their combination right ahead of the 2022 T20 World Cup, the tour to the Caribbean will be extra important. In the ODI series, most of the senior players have been rested with Shikhar Dhawan being the captain. During their journey to Caribbean, Dhawan made an insta-reel involving members of the squad.
Virat Kohli, who is struggling to get back to form, has found support from his teammates. Just like India skipper Rohit Sharma, swashbuckling batter Dinesh Karthik has also come out in Kohli's support. "Virat has experienced insane success over the period of time. Now he will get a good break and will come back all recharged and hopefully will do phenomenally well. You can never rule out a player of his calibre," Karthik said on the sidelines of a training session with the budding cricketers at the PS Sports Excellence Arena here on Monday. Kohli has been rested for the West Indies tour which will begin on July 22.
