NEW DELHI : Shreyas Iyer's lower back injury has left India without a settled number four batter in the one-day squad ahead of this year's home World Cup, skipper Rohit Sharma said.
Several new players have made their senior international debut in the Indian team since the conclusion of the 2022 T20 World Cup. While the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been away from the T20 format entirely, they were even kept away from the ODI side in the recent showdown against West Indies. With the Asia Cup being Team India's next big event, skipper Rohit Sharma suggested that even he isn't an automatic selection in the squad at the moment. Rohit also hinted that there will be pressure on some players to perform at the Asia Cup with World Cup spots up for grabs.
Indian cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma is gearing up for a busy period in the next two months, with the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup scheduled to be held. While has already led the Indian team to Asia Cup triumph once, he hasn't won the ODI World Cup yet, be it as a captain or as a player. Having been given the captaincy of the Indian team after Virat Kohli's exit from the leadership role, Rohit is eager to bring the Team success on all fronts. However, 'captaincy' still remains secorndary for him, it's his role as a batter that is primary.
Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma on Thursday said Indian Super League (ISL) has helped the national football team take giant strides at the world stage. Rohit added the Indian team has gained in confidence and backed them to perform well in upcoming tournaments. "They have taken a giant leap in where they are at this moment," he said at an event in Mumbai.
With both KL Rahul – India's preferred option for No. 5 as wicketkeeper-batter – and Shreyas Iyer on comeback trail, Rohit Sharma has said they will wait and watch how these two players go. "No one is an automatic (selection), even I am not. We have this thing where nobody is guaranteed a spot. We cannot say that 'you are there after all' or things like that," Rohit said.
With the ODI World Cup 2023 fast approaching, the Indian cricket team is in its final mode of preparation. The team recently ended the ODI series against West Indies as winners, despite regular captain Rohit Sharma and ex-India skipper Virat Kohli not featuring in the fional two games. It looked like the Indian team management was preparing for a contingency plan. Now Rohit Sharma has said that nobody is assured of a place in the World Cup squad.
The ODI World Cup 2023 in India is less that two months away but the hosts' team combination is nowhere close to being sorted. Much like the 2019 World Cup, the one slot which is bothering India is the No. 4 slot. No batter has succeeded in settling into the vital number four slot in the Indian ODI team since the retirement of Yuvraj Singh, captain Rohit Sharma said on Thursday, raising serious concerns before the World Cup. With the 50-over World Cup less than two months away, India are struggling to find a batter for the No. 4 slot, something that has also troubled them in the previous edition in 2019 in England.
India captain Rohit Sharma is enjoying his time away from the game as he prepares to lead the team at the Asia Cup later this month. Rohit was with the Indian team in West Indies earlier this month, but left the Caribbean Islands after the conclusion of the ODI series. Rohit, Virat Kohli and other senior players have been rested for the West Indies and Ireland T20Is. Last week, Rohit launched his cricket academy in California, USA.
