NEW DELHI : Shreyas Iyer's number four slot is not under threat from in-form team mate KL Rahul, batting coach Vikram Rathour said on the eve of their World Cup match against Afghanistan on Wednesday.
Navigating their way through some extreme pressure moments in their tournament opener, India will be eyeing a near perfect game against a sprightly Afghanistan in the ODI World Cup in New Delhi on Wednesday. As pointed out by skipper Rohit Sharma, India's biggest challenge over the course of the league stage will be to quickly adapt to the conditions in nine different venues. After a slow and spinning track at Chepauk, a belter of a surface is expected at the Feroz Shah Kotla, where more than 700 runs were plundered in a high-scoring affair between South Africa and Sri Lanka last week.
The return of Ravichandran Ashwin to India's ODI team was a big surprise for many. An injury to Axar Patel prompted the selectors to include Ashwin as a replacement, and the veteran off-spinner had the performances to justify his selection. After playing an important role in India's victory over Australia in the team's Cricket World Cup opener, Ashwin revealed the chat he had with skipper Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid before being included in the squad.
India wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul has conceded that he found the continued criticism directed at him painful and puzzling especially when his performance was not that bad. Rahul, who was out of action for months due to a thigh injury he sustained during the IPL in May, returned to the side during the Asia Cup last month, where he finished as the side's third-highest run-scorer.
India were off to a horrible start to the run chase against Australia in their opening match of Cricket World Cup 2023 on Sunday with skipper Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer all losing their wickets without scoring a single run. This was the second instance in Cricket World Cup history that both of India's openers were dismissed for a duck in the same match. Before Kishan and Rohit, the dubious feat was achieved by Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Sunil Gavaskar who were dismissed without disturbing the scorers against Zimbabwe in the 1983 Cricket World Cup. That match is incidentally etched in history books thanks to a stupendous 175-run knock by Kapil Dev that left the cricketing world stunned. Shubman Gill will miss India's World Cup meeting with Afghanistan, the country's cricket board (BCCI) said on Monday, as the in-form opener continues his recovery from dengue fever.
Team India's opener Subhman Gill is recovering fast from Dengue, the batsman missed the opener of the ODI World Cup and now he could miss the game against Afghanistan also as he is in the mode of recovering. But the buzz was there that he would stay in Chennai for rest or be at his home in Chandigarh but not at all packed his bag for Delhi. A source told ANI, "Subhman Gill is recovering and he will be travelling with the team to Delhi, he will be with the team and is not likely to go to his home Chandigarh for rest we hope that he will be back on the field before the match against Pakistan and playing against Afghanistan will depend on his next report."
India's star batter Shubman Gill, who is reportedly down with dengue fever, is set to miss the team's second Cricket World Cup 2023 match against Afghanistan, confirms BCCI. Gill was ruled out of India's opening match of the World Cup against Australia at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai having been down with fever for the last few days. In the match against Australia, Ishan Kishan replaced the opening batter, pairing up with India captain Rohit Sharma.
