The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the Team of the Tournament for the Cricket World Cup 2023 and it included six players from the Indian cricket team. India went unbeaten in the competition before losing to Australia in the final. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami were the ones named in the team. Apart from the Indian cricketers, South Africa's Quinton de Kock, New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell, Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell and spinner Adam Zampa along with Sri Lanka fast bowler Dilshan Madushanka were also included.

Steve Smith made a huge mistake by not taking a crucial review despite being not-out during the Cricket World Cup 2023 final between India and Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. During the seventh over of the Australian innings, a slower delivery from Jasprit Bumrah crashed into Smith's pads and the entire India team went up in appeal. The umpire gave him out and although Smith was a bit interested, he was advised by Travis Head to not go for a review. However, replays showed that the impact of the ball was outside the off-stump and the decision would have been reversed.
Australia's 2003 World Cup-winning captain Ricky Ponting was impressed with Travis Head's sensational display and called him one of the best all-format players in the world. Australia's left-handed opener took the fight to Indian bowlers, kept the run flow above the asking rate and produced an exhilarating knock of 137. Ponting hailed Travis for his performance and told Sky Sports, "Travis is emerging as one of the three or four best all-format players in the world. His Test record is outstanding. He is unorthodox at times [in one-day cricket] and you wonder how he will get past the new ball, but he does and scores big runs."
