I Never Disrespect Tennis Community, I Am Part Of It: Rohit Rajpal

India's non-playing Davis Cup captain Rohit Rajpal on Saturday clarified that his "shut-up" remark was meant for a few "agenda-driven" people consistently targeting him and was not directed at the country's tennis community as has been projected. In a free-wheeling interview with PTI, Rajpal said that people questioning his credentials as Davis Cup captain should do a bit of research and he is not someone who would cling to the position in the face of resistance from players. He asserted that it is not necessary that only an accomplished player can become a good coach and guarantee success of the national team. To drive his point, he said extremely successful players did not boast reputed names in their support staff.

Team India Ready For Davis Cup 2025 World Group I Playoffs Against Togo, Confident Of Strong Performance

Backed by strong preparations over the previous week, including acclimatization, singles and doubles-specific training, and team cohesion building, Team India is confident of delivering a robust performance in their Davis Cup 2025 World Group I Playoffs tie against Togo at the DLTA Complex, New Delhi, on February 1 and 2. Led by captain Rohit Rajpal, a former Davis Cupper and a member of the Indian tennis team at the 1990 Asian Games, Team India consists of five members: the experienced N Sriram Balaji, Ramkumar Ramanathan, and Mukund Sasikumar, and debutants Rithvik Bollipalli and Karan Singh.

"No Conditions On Playing For India": Yuki Bhambri, Sumit Nagal's Davis Cup Absence Slammed

India will be without their highest-ranked singles and doubles players, Sumit Nagal and Yuki Bhambri, respectively, for the Davis Cup 2025 World Group I play-off tie against Togo scheduled on February 1-2. The duo have made themselves unavailable because of some dispute with the administrators. Team India captain Rohit Rajpal admitted the duo has grievances with the All India Tennis Association (AITA) and hoped they will return to action soon. “Yuki and Sumit both have played for the country. They have some grievances with, I think, a couple of people in AITA, which need to be sorted. We are working towards it. But I still believe that you know, from my captain, Vijay Amritraj, our values that we passed on to the generations and that were passed on to me is that, you know, your nation comes first.

Sumit Nagal Refuses National Duty Again, Sasikumar Mukund Returns To Davis Cup Squad

Sumit Nagal has yet again refused to play for the country in the Davis Cup, putting "unreasonable conditions" for his return even as Sasikumar Mukund on Friday came back to the national squad for the tie against Togo after his suspension was revoked by the AITA Executive Committee. Nagal, who has been struggling on the ATP tour, had pulled out of the tie against Sweden in September citing a back strain. He had also refused to travel to Islamabad for the contest against Pakistan in January-February, saying the grass courts do not suit his style of play.

Sumit Nagal, India's Top Men's Singles Tennis Player, Refused To Play For Country: AITA

The All India Tennis Association (AITA) on Tuesday suggested that the country's top player Sumit Nagal perhaps deliberately missed the Davis Cup tie against Sweden last week, claiming that he was injured but is now set to play an ATP tournament in China. India were hammered 0-4 by Sweden and AITA secretary Anil Dhupar said absence of top players like Nagal and Yuki Bhambri in the squad hurt the national team's chances of doing well in the World Group I contest in Stockholm.

Davis Cup: Ramkumar Ramanathan-N Sriram Balaji Pair And Siddharth Vishwakarma Lose, India Suffer Sixth Defeat Against Sweden

Ramkumar Ramanathan and N Sriram Balaji could play well only in patches in the do-or-die doubles encounter and later Siddharth Vishwakarma lost on debut as India went down 0-4 to Sweden in the Davis Cup World Group I tie in Stockholm on Sunday. After losing both the singles on Saturday, India needed to win the third rubber to stay alive in the tie but Ramkumar and Balaji went down 3-6 4-6 against Andre Goransson and Filip Bergevi in one hour and 19 minutes to concede an unassailable 0-3 lead.

Davis Cup: N Sriram Balaji, Ramkumar Ramanthan Lose On Opening Day, India Trail Sweden 0-2

N Sriram Balaji was easily tamed by Elias Ymer while Ramkumar Ramanathan lacked the killer instinct even against a lower-ranked Leo Borg as India were left trailing 0-2 against Sweden in the Davis Cup World Group I tie, on Saturday. Balaji, who is a doubles specialist, found the going tough against Ymer, who raced to a 6-4 6-2 win in the opening singles. Ramkumar, who is a seasoned Davis Cupper now, was expected to bring India back into the tie but he lost to 603-ranked Borg, son of the legendary Bjorn Borg 3-6 3-6, in the second singles at the Royal Tennis Hall.

Zeeshan Ali Resigns As India's Davis Cup Coach

Zeeshan Ali on Wednesday announced that he has resigned as India coach, insisting that it was time to focus on the development of the National Tennis Centre (NTC). Zeeshan had replaced Nandan Bal as India's Davis Cup coach in 2013 when the country's top players had revolted against AITA, demanding better playing conditions, and refused to play against Korea in New Delhi. The 54-year-old Zeeshan captained the country in the historic tie against Pakistan, which India won in Islamabad early this year with regular skipper Rohit Rajpal missing the assignment due to personal reasons.
