Yuki Bhambri-Albano Olivetti Pair Advances To Marrakech Open Semifinals

India's Yuki Bhambri and his French partner Albano Olivetti knocked out third seeds Nicholas Barrientos and Rafael Matos to breeze into the men's doubles semifinals of the ATP Marrakech Open. The unseeded Indo-French combine upset Colombian Nicholas Barrientos and Rafael Matos of Brazil, eking out a close 7-6(5) 6-7 10-7 win in the quarterfinal that lasted almost two hours on Thursday. They will face second seeds Lucas Miedler and Alexander Erler of Austria in the last-four stage of the ATP 250 event. The quarterfinal was fought on an even keel with both pairs winning 50 per cent of the total points. Bhambri and Olivetti hit 10 aces as compared to their opponents' three. Bhambri has teamed up with Olivetti for the first time this season, having played with Dutch player Robin Haase in most of the tournaments.

In the process, Bopanna, aged 44, became the oldest man to win a Masters 1000 title on the ATP circuit. The tennis star broke his own record, having created it last year by winning the Indian Wells title. The Miami Open win also enabled Bopanna to become the second Indian since Leander Paes to reach the finals of all nine ATP Masters 1000 events.

India's top singles player Sumit Nagal dropped out of top-100 after losing 16 points from his kitty, resulting in him sliding three spots to 101 in the latest ATP rankings. Last year in the same week, Nagal had earned 41 ranking points by reaching the semifinals of the Chennai Challenger as a qualifier. He was defending those points and could earn only 25 in Bengaluru last week. The reigning Australian Open men's doubles champion Rohan Bopanna has set his sight on the Paris Olympics 2024 starting July 26 after winning his maiden men's doubles grand slam. "I think Olympics is very much in the pipeline. It is going to be amazing that we will be having a tennis team participating at Olympics but before that I have a lot of Masters series like Indian Wells, Miami then the clay court season begins. We have the French Open and Wimbledon. So, we have so many events before the Olympics. You know for tennis calendar it is pretty busy. Every week there is a tournament. So, a lot of wonderful things to look forward to and excited for the seaosn coming up," said Rohan Bopanna while speaking to ANI.
